Toppik – A Handy Hair Loss Helper

We get lots of FAQ’s from interested Toppik shoppers so we thought we’d post the most popular questions and answers here! Consider this your one-stop Toppik snapshot.

Can Toppik be used by men and women?
Yes, it’s great for both men and women. Sweet!

How does Toppik work?
The Toppik tiny microfiber “hairs” are electro-statically charged to form a magnetic attraction with your existing hair – however thin – and blend perfectly to conceal the appearance of thinning and balding in seconds. Think of it as a quick concealer for those ‘oh no, my scalp is showing’ spots.

Will Toppik match my hair color?
With eight, color-matched fiber choices available, you can conceal thinning hair from snow white to jet black and every shade in between. Toppik is available in Black, Dark Brown, Medium Brown, Light Brown, Auburn, Blond, Grey and White. Feel free to mix and match two or more colors if you want to capture the lights and darks of your natural hair color. Our most popular combo is Light Brown and Medium Brown used together. See the next question for a color combining tip.

I have salt and pepper hair. How should I use Toppik for best results?
Use white Toppik fibers in combination with either black, dark brown or medium brown. Apply the white fibers first and then “pepper” in the darker color. It will blend perfectly and capture the different tones of your natural hair color.

How do I apply Toppik?
A few shakes of Toppik above your thinning areas will disperse thousands of tiny hair-like fibers that will match your existing hair color, and bond with your own hair to conceal thinning and create a more natural looking, thicker, fuller head of hair. These tiny sprinkles really cover quickly too, you don’t need much to make a big difference in the appearance of your thinning area. Check out this video too.

How long does Toppik stay on?
The secure bond stays put all day (and night) even in rain, wind, you name it – it won’t come off until you wash it out. Toppik fibers will never run, smear or stain, and are proven to withstand wind, rain, and even perspiration. Seriously, it really stays put.

Will people know I’m wearing Toppik?
Toppik fibers look like natural hair particles and stay secure and undetectable as close as two inches away. People will notice you and your smiling face instead of your showing scalp.

What size does Toppik come in?
Toppik comes in 4 sizes perfect for your individual needs:

Giant – A 150 day supply. The best value and the best-selling, most popular size.
Economy – A 75 day supply.
Regular – A 30 day supply.
Travel – This smaller size is ideal for taking your “full head of hair” with you while you travel. It’s also great for on-the-go touch ups too. If you are new to the to the brand, or cannot decide on your color, pick up one or two of the travel sizes to give it a test on your own thinning areas.

How do I apply Toppik to my front hair line?
In frontal areas, spread your thumb and forefinger and place your hand on the top of the forehead below the hairline to keep stray fibers from falling onto forehead and eyes. For the best application on frontal areas we suggest using Toppik Hairline Optimizer.

How can I get better results with Toppik?
You may lightly apply Toppik FiberHold Spray to lock the fibers into place and to provide added durability and a finished touch.

How can I get a more natural look?
You can dramatically improve your results by using the Toppik Spray Maximizer and Toppik Hairline Optimizer. These precision instruments allow you to precisely spray on Toppik and enhance your hairline. You will immediately see an even more natural look.

What if I get Toppik fibers on my clothes or pillow?
The fibers are 100% colorfast and cannot possibly run or stain. If fibers do get on any surface, immediately just dust them right off with your hand and they’ll disappear.

Is Toppik compatible with hair growth drugs?
Yes, Toppik is totally compatible with hair growth drugs like Minoxidil and Propecia.

Does Toppik affect hair growth?
No, Toppik fibers can neither help nor interfere with normal hair growth in any way. How do I use Toppik and Minoxidil at the same time?  Apply Minoxidil (or any topical treatment) first and then apply Toppik. At night just apply Minoxidil. While wearing Toppik – a little may come off on your hand from the alcohol contained in the Minoxidil solution.

Can Toppik be used after surgery?
Some physicians advise their hair restoration patients to use such products to enhance the look of fullness in their transplanted areas. These products can also be used after surgery to hide the immediate surgery.

What is Toppik FiberHold Spray?
Toppik FiberHold Spray is the perfect accompaniment to Toppik Hair Building Fibers. This fine mist was specifically developed to increase the bond between Toppik Fibers and your thinning hairs. Unlike ordinary hair sprays, this formula uses sophisticated alpha grade resins to join thinner hair and Toppik fibers naturally and durably, so they stay put all day long.

How do I use Toppik FiberHold Spray?
Spray on after using Toppik Hair Building Fibers for a secure, long-lasting hold. May be brushed lightly after drying for a softer look.

Treating specific areas with Toppik Maximizer:

Filling Out Your Front Hairline:
The Maximizer is perfect for filling out your front hairline. For best results, use it with the Toppik Hairline Optimizer, a laser generated template that allows for a perfectly natural hairline that replicates the growth pattern of your own hair.

  • Remove the sifter from the bottle by gently turning and lifting it.
  • Screw the Toppik Spray Maximizer onto the bottle.
  • By squeezing the ball, you will cause a burst of Toppik, perfectly dispersed, into your hair.
  • You will find that the fibers distribute more evenly and that you have more control over where the fibers are placed in your hair.
  • To thicken precise areas, try inserting the nozzle into your hair and spray gently.

The Maximizer is perfect for filling out your front hairline. For best results, use it with the Toppik Hairline Optimizer, a laser generated template that allows for a perfectly natural hairline that replicates the growth pattern of your own hair.

Iron Deficiency and Hair Loss

The hair care industry is a billion dollar industry. A perm, relaxer or color ranges in price from $65 to over $100 and most women get their hair retouched every 2-3 months. That’s a lot of money spent per year!

The models that grace the pages of magazines and on television commercials shaking their heads to show off their fabulous locks is one of the major reasons that the industry is doing so well. Women want to look their best and will find any means to do so. Why wouldn’t anyone want to look fabulous! We see our favorite celebrities do it so why not us?

However, there is one area of the hair industry that is not publicized as much, and that is hair loss in women, which has become very common in many women. This can be an incredibly devastating experience for many women. The loss of hair can lead to feelings of embarrassment and shame.

A three-year study of women suffering from loss of hair in the late 1990’s had identified iron deficiency as the cause of hair loss in 72% of pre-menopausal women. This loss of iron could lead to anemia. But women should not wait for their doctor to diagnose them with having anemia (defined as too little iron in the blood). They should focus on maintaining a healthy diet.

Here are some recommendations:

Try to get your recommended daily iron intake. Some women with iron deficiency have experienced many strands and sometimes handfuls of hair going down the drain when washing their hair and they were not pregnant (note: pregnancy can sometimes cause premature loss of hair).

So, your best bet is to avoid these nightmarish experiences and increase your iron intake on a daily basis. Make sure your diet contains enough meat, fish, eggs, cereals, peas and beans. Try eating more dried fruits, legumes and dark leafy greens, which are very high in iron content.

If you are experiencing hair loss, contact your doctor immediately. If you are taking any medications your doctor should be able to determine if this may be the cause.

There are many factors which can cause hair loss, iron deficiency is only one of them.

Is Your Hair Loss Normal?

Everyone experiences hair loss at some point, but do you know when you are experiencing normal hair loss, or if something is wrong? There are many instances when you may lose hair due to an illness or treatment, and hair loss is sometimes caused by heredity.

When you think your hair is coming out faster than usual, you need to be sure it is normal hair loss and not an indication that something is wrong.

The most common reason of normal hair loss is heredity; if there is baldness in your family, you may expect to lose some of your hair as you age.

What surprises some people is that it can happen at a young age. Some men (and women) lose hair early, and are shocked to find their hair coming out and leaving bald spots. Even when there seems to be no balding gene in your family, it may happen.

If you are a woman with long, naturally curly hair, you may become worried about the amount of hair that comes out in your brush. Most people lose up to a hundred strands of hair a day. This may seem like a lot, but you are also growing new hair at the same time. When you have curly hair, the strands fall out, but stay tangled in your healthy hair. This is why it may seem to all come out at once when you brush or wash your hair. It’s normal, and you will soon learn what to expect.

There are times when your normal hair loss seems to accelerate. Hair tends to grow in cycles, so there may be times when you lose more than usual. While women tend to keep most of their hair, there are medical conditions that cause hair loss. One common condition is PCOS or polycystic ovarian syndrome. Some women with this condition lose hair and will have bald and thinning patches. If this is happening to you, you may want to see your doctor to discuss the possibility that you may have PCOS.

Some medical treatments result in hair loss as well. If you are receiving cancer treatments, you may notice you are losing hair. This isn’t as common as it used to be, but it still happens to many cancer patients.

This hair loss can go way beyond normal hair loss, and leave you with no hair at all. Don’t worry though, in many cases, it will grow back after your treatment is finished but you might want to research natural hair loss treatments if you want to be on the safe side.

Hair Loss and Women

Before menopause, about 13 percent of women experience hair thinning. After menopause, reporting of the problem from women increases to about 37 percent. A common type of hair loss in women is androgenetic alopecia, which is related to hormone levels in the body.

There’s a large genetic predisposition, which may be inherited from the father or mother. Another important cause of hair loss in women is a condition called alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease that affects more than two per cent of the population. In this, the hair follicles are attacked by white blood cells.

What is with the “Circle of life?” I mean, sometimes it all seems like one sad, cruel joke.

We start off as tiny babies, who can barely even do anything worthwhile. Well, that is unless you count drinking milk, crying, sleeping and pooping worthwhile. So maybe the crying part is pretty cool. We then progress to the stage of adulthood, which goes well for a while, but then something happens. We begin to deteriorate. Yeah, that’s what I said, and you know what I mean. Our bodies have trouble staying fir, our metabolism slows down significantly, our teeth get yellow, wrinkles appear on our faces, and our hair falls out. What in the heck is this all about? Soon we’re back in jumbo sized diapers and barely walking.

However, there are things we can do to prevent and even treat most of these things. Well, except maybe the jumbo sized diapers. You’re on your own with that one. But dilemmas such as tooth decay, weight gain and hair loss can be dealt with accordingly. Now, women’s hair loss may be a whole different subject.

What do you know about women’s hair loss? Sure, you are probably thinking to yourself, it’s the same thing as men’s hair loss. We both have heads that are covered with hair, but then one day the hair falls out. Granted, this is true.

Women’s hair loss is certainly not as common as men’s. One of the commonest forms of hair loss in women (and men) is a condition called telogen effluvium, in which there is a diffuse (or widely spread out) shedding of hairs around the scalp and elsewhere on the body. This is usually a reaction to intense stress on the body’s physical or hormonal systems, or as a reaction to medication.

Causes of Female Hair Loss

The MSNBC Today Show’s: Natalie Morales talks with “Today”  One cause of hair loss in women can be hormonal imbalances. Having an overactive or under active thyroid gland may cause thinning hair. Treating the thyroid disease will usually help this type of female hair loss. Hormones can also cause hair loss if female hormones (estrogens), are out of balance causing women’s hair loss. However, if the hormone imbalance is corrected, the hair loss should stop.

Child birth may result in sudden hair loss in women. It’s common for many women to notice hair loss after pregnancy – immediately 3 months after they had a baby. This too, is caused by hormones. But this is not something to worry about. During pregnancy, hair shedding during the normal hair cycle is retarded in by high levels of hormones. Once the hormones have returned to pre-pregnancy levels, this extra hair is shed with the normal cycle of hair growth and loss returning over time.

Hair Loss from Menopause and Hormonal Therapies — causes of female hair loss can come from hormonal therapies such as Progesterone, a female hormone that inhibits the development of a new follicle. Hair loss and menopause are commonly linked and result in thinning hair in older women. Before menopause, about 13 percent of women experience hair thinning. After menopause, reporting of the problem from women increases to about 37 percent.

One thing that is a sad truth regarding hair loss is the stereotype. It’s a casual deal when men lose their precious dews. Indeed it does suck, and any man would prefer to keep his hair throughout eternity, but if it should decrease or go away, the man learns to deal with the burden. Society doesn’t really pick him apart or call him a loser. It’s far too common for that. However, what about women’s hair loss?

Have you ever given women’s hair loss some serious thought?

The general public does not see this affliction as normal in any way. In fact, many women are virtually ostracized for losing their beautiful locks. It’s just one of those features that’s a crucial part of being female. Society has made it this way. Regardless, women’s hair loss is a problem for some. Fortunately there are more hair regrowth treatments available now days to deal with this burden.

Leading Causes of Hair Loss

If you’re losing your hair you know it’s a serious thing, but did you ever wonder why it’s happening? Here are the top causes of hair loss according to one of our favorite hair loss authorities Nioxin.

Family: Yep, genetics. Though you may have heard that hair loss runs through your mother’s father, the way your body converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is hereditary from mom or pop.

Hormones: Certain health changes during pregnancy, childbirth and menopause may make your hormones whacky, and cause hair loss. So can improper thyroid function – those hormones again!

Environment: External pollution, mineral deposits from your water in the shower (hint – filter it), and toxins in the air can all contribute to hair loss. Internal toxins inside your body can also be a trigger, so try to detox.

Drugs: Steroids, birth control pills, chemo treatments, acne meds, heart pills, you name it. If you are taking any medication it could possibly cause loss of hair. Your hair follicles are super sensitive and don’t like change.

Stress: When we’ve “had it up to here” and stressed to the max the body produces increased testosterone. Yep, and this is converted to DHT which interferes with hair growth. De-stress. Relax. Chill.

Diet: High fat, fad diets and bad eating habits can all contribute to the health of your hair. Things like iron, biotin and protein are all vital for healthy hair and if you’re diet is lacking, well you know.

What can you do? Try to avoid all of the triggers. Unfortunately you cannot escape heredity but you can make sure you follow a healthy diet and stay away from the stress! Hey, every little bit helps.

Hair Loss Prevention Tips

Although hair is not essential to life, it is of sufficient cosmetic concern to provoke anxiety in anyone when it starts thinning, falling, or disappearing. To a woman or men, the sight of a comb or brush covered with lost hair can cause intense mental strain. What is the most precious aspect of your image? I am referring to that characteristic you possess and are proud of. Is it your perfectly shaped nose, or your high cheek bones? Maybe it’s your beautiful complexion or your dazzling smile.

Regardless of what it is, you certainly don’t want to lose it. Am I right or am I right? I was recently watching an old interview with Tom Ford, and it made me empathize. No, this isn’t the truck guy, but rather a fashion designer for Gucci. He was asked what he felt his best feature was. It was odd because he relied, “Well, it was my hair, but it’s almost gone now.” He kind of snickered about the situation, but I seriously doubt he thinks it’s funny. The truth of the matter is that no one wants to lose their hair, regardless of how old they are. This is why I think hair loss prevention is the key. Is your ‘do still up there?

Do you know anything about hair loss prevention? I know a few things, which I actually learned most of it from reading online. One of the things I found amusing about hair loss prevention is that no one really thinks about it. The topic simply never arises until it has to. Are you worried about your precious locks? The answer is probably no, unless you’re noticing some hair in the drain lately. I have been lucky so far, but I can’t say that I will never lose my hair. Hey, I’m only 32 so far.

However, I do plan to adopt a few hair loss prevention measures. One of them is the hair loss prevention formulas you can do: daily routine head massages. I know, I know, it sounds ridiculous. However, I read that it stimulates the scalp and encourages hair growth. Furthermore, so does hanging upside down every other day or so. Another way to tackle hair loss prevention is with a daily multivitamin. Our body seriously craves all those daily essential nutrients and minerals. Some of which, help our hair.

One thing that is worth to think about that hair loss that is caused by medications, stress, lack of protein or iron, or hair care may be prevented. Avoiding certain medications, reducing stress, getting adequate protein and iron in your diet, and using hairstyles that do not damage your hair may reduce or prevent hair loss.

If you are in search of quality hair loss prevention tips there are many hair loss prevention tips and products that literally help with your hair regrowth treatment. There are a number of solutions there if you just take the time to look.

You might want to take a look at breakthrough hair loss prevention formulas designed to block DHT and supply the proper nutrients to your body specifically tailored to prevent hair loss and to help you regrow hair naturally. Strong, healthy hair begins with the proper nutritional building blocks.
