GHD MK4 Flat Iron Review

GHD MK4 Ceramic Flat IronWith so many flat irons on the market, how do you really know which one is right for you? I’ve been testing them out to see how each one works, and why. Today I’d like to share my review of the latest wonder from GHD, the GHD MK4 1″ Ceramic Flat Iron. Touted as one of the best flat irons on the market, I absolutely loved it.

Incorporating state-of-the-art styling technology, the GHD MK4 Straightener and Styler looks very similar to a lot of flat irons out there, but that’s where the similarities end. It’s different, and really, it’s better. All of you CHI fanatics take note, if you ever try a GHD, you’ll see what I’m talking about, and if you currently use a ‘drugstore variety’ flat iron, you’ll be amazed.

The MK4 has a rounded barrel for improved curling and styling, and let me tell you, it curls as easily as it straightens, giving you the ultimate in versatility. You should know that most flat irons will produce curls, but with this iron, it was easy and the curls were nice. I chalk that up to the way this ceramic iron smoothed my strands. It took out all the texture. It didn’t just ‘flatten’, it smoothed. And curled. Major props for that.

The GHD MK4 also has advanced ceramic heaters that are designed to sense the porosity of your hair type to apply and maintain the perfect amount of heat with every glide. That’s cool. Really cool. The iron stayed hot the whole time – no damaging ‘hot spots’ like some other brands – you know who you are! But honestly, it didn’t need to stay hot so long because it straightened my hair super-fast.

The ceramic plates that promise smooth, static free glides took out all my frizz in no time. Some flat irons have been known to create static on hair – especially ones with Tourmaline – so static-free was a huge plus. This iron also had an extremely good grip of my hair while styling, which is very important when choosing a flat iron, because it usually translates into quicker styling with less passes down the same section of hair. Additionally, the ghd MK4 has great tension control, which means I didn’t have to give myself carpal tunnel squeezing the plates together super hard as I straightened each section of my hair. Minimal tension worked just fine thank you.

This iron comes nicely packaged with a step-by-step DVD included in the box which is great for you newbies, but obviously you can always catch a styling video here on our blog if you need some extra help – check out Flat Iron Styling with GHD.

This iron gets two snaps up in Z formation. Watch out competition (ahem CHI), there’s a top player in town, the GHD MK4 has arrived and it’s fabulous! I hope more people get past the pricey price point and give it a try, it really is worth it.

P.S. The ghd MK4 also has an awesome auto adjust feature for international voltages so I can style my way around the world, if I ever get to do that…

Trend Alert: Buns are Back!

Heidi KlumAs I’m sure you noticed on the Academy Awards broadcast the other night, the bun is making a big comeback. My top picks for this simple yet sophisticated hairstyle have got to be Jessica Alba and Heidi Klum. Both bodacious, becoming buns took the looks of the evening from to elegant to enchanting, and are getting lots of media attention. No longer just a quick hairstyle to get your hair out of the way when working out or going to bed, buns and buns with braids are back… and in a big way! In this video clip from Vogue’s Runway Report, expert hairstylist Rodney Cutler shows us how to create a beautiful bun with our favorite Redken products and a hairpin or two.

Celeb Style: Blake Lively

Blake LivelyBlake Lively’s long and loose, sun-kissed style is both carefree and classic. This beachy, textured hair is such an effortless, sexy look – especially in the summer time when your ‘do seems to “do that” naturally. But what about now? It’s cold, and the salty, sandy, summer winds of the beach are not around when it’s snowing outside. Thanks to the product gods, we don’t have to suffer the snow to get this look!

To capture your own beach babe look, start with a little Fudge Skrewd Curl Enhancing Cream on dry hair to add extra texture and ensure the waves you create stay put. Then fire up a Bed Head 3 Barrel Tourmaline Nano-Ceramic Dual Waver to create the waves of your dreams. Complete with a rotating middle barrel, this wave maker uses Ceramic ionic technology and creates deep and soft long-lasting waves without damage. Finish with a few pumps of Bumble & bumble Surf Spray and you’re good to go. For some extra glam, brush on a little bronzer for a golden glow to compliment your new “trip to St. Tropez” look. You go Gossip Girl!

Don’t have a waver? That’s cool. You can check out this video to get this look with just your fingertips.

Set Your Style

Bain de Terre Flax Seed Finishing SprayAfter you have finished styling your hair and you’re looking fab, don’t you want to make sure your efforts are seen by everyone?

There is nothing worse than smoothing every last hair strand into perfect position before heading out the door to realize your fly-aways and split ends are showing by the time you arrive.

You didn’t spend all your time coaxing those curls into perfect corkscrews to have them unravel! You didn’t straighten those strands into silky submission to have them misbehave an hour later!

A good finishing spray is built on this principle. Some add shine, some add control and others create volume or texture, or both. But whether you like it poofy or sleek, your hairstyle needs a finishing spray. Definitely.

Shine Seekers: Davines Defining Glam Power Finishing Spray is the definition of glossy glamour.

Strong Hold: CHI Helmet Head. Hello, it’s called helmet head for a reason.

Softer Styles: Flexible, touchable hold is yours in a flash with Reflex Spray from the L’anza Art Elements line.

Scent Snob: Try Bain de Terre Flax Seed Infinite Hold Finishing Spray – it’s the perfect unscented styler.

Style it, finish it. Words to live by!

Thinking of Getting a Keratin Hair Treatment?

You’ve heard all about these Keratin Treatments and seriously want one. Ok, maybe you’re not 100% sure what it is, but it’s getting so much buzz, you think you should want one too! You’re never one to be left out, but hmmm… what is it? How does it work? What will happen when I go to my salon and sit in the chair? We get asked about Keratin Hair Treatments all the time, and there seem to be plenty of treatments to choose from, so do your homework carefully if you are thinking of keratin treatment like this for your hair.

As firm believers in helping you do your hair homework before undergoing any process that will change your hair dramatically, we surfed around and found this video so you can see what really happens. We are very wary of any chemical treatment that has a potential to be damaging to your delicate strands. Most Brazilian treatments (BKT) contain as much as 2% formaldehyde. Yes formaldehyde, and many treatments can contain higher percentages than that. For more info, read our article Brazilian Keratin Treatment 411.

Bonus points: It looks like this video features the Babyliss Nano Titanium Flat Iron. This iron is also featured on our list of Best Flat Irons of 2007, kudos Babyliss – we know this iron works well without a harsh chemical treatment.

Of Jessica’s many different styles one of my all-time favorites is the vampy, teased look in the picture to the left. I’ve seen her wear this with straight and wavy hair and either way it looks absolutely fab. It’s the epitome of glamour without trying.

Such a simple style, really. All you need is a long-tailed teasing comb from the drugstore, some killer, flexible styling spray like Alterna Caviar Working Hair Spray and a few minutes to watch this video…

Now we can all channel our inner Brigette Bardot with this simple, sexy hairstyle!
