What’s a Nano Titanium Flat Iron?

Question:
What’s Nano Titanium? Should my flat iron have this? I want an iron that won’t damage my hair and my friend told me to get a ceramic one. Is this better?
– Chris via phone

Answer:
With so much tech-talk about flat irons, you could really go crazy! Here at StyleBell we try to make sure that we find out what technology each appliance has and, more importantly, what this technology does to your hair so we can share it with you. Nano Titanium is a state-of-the-art material used in some of the flat irons and hair dryers we carry from BaByliss, so here’s the scoop:

Babyliss Pro Nano Titanium Flat IronFlat irons, hair dryers and other heat appliances conduct large amounts of heat to help smooth your hair strands and according to BaByliss, Nano Titanium is an exceptional conductor of this heat, even better than ceramic. This innovative material maintains stability in ultra-high temperatures and emits negative ions known to smooth the positive ions in your hair. This is the same smoothing process as a ceramic or tourmaline flat (or curling) iron, but it uses a different material that happens to retain the much longer.

Whether you are using a flat iron or hair dryer, utilizing these negative ions in this beneficial way creates a faster way of straightening and drying the hair. It also helps keep the hair in good condition by locking in the hair’s own natural moisture. Read “no damage”. Anytime you can keep the natural moisture in you hair, it’s a good thing. It keeps your hair shiny and in better condition.

Nano Titanium is also an exceptionally smooth surface for flat irons and curling irons so they will glide down your hair without pulling, tugging or breaking your delicate hair (I love that). The BaByliss PRO Nano Titanium Straightener yields the maximum amount of far-infrared heat that  penetrates the hair from the inside out to straighten gently, without causing damage (I love that too).

Not only is Nano Titanium is a great new material for flat irons, curling irons, hair dryers, you’ll be impressed with the results you see after one use. The latest technological advances always catch my eye and I expect to be seeing a lot more products with this innovative material in the future. It really is one of the superior materials in hair appliances I’ve seen.

Celebrate Curls!

Whether you have naturally kinky hair, soft curls, or loose waves you can find everything you need to keep your curly hairstyle looking great. Born without curls? These top tips will help you create more defined, longer lasting curls with hot rollers, curling irons, or flat irons with curved plates. From carefree corkscrews to ravishing ringlets, if you have curls, these tips are for you.

CHI Curl Preserve Leave-in TreatmentHumidity Proofing

In my opinion, carefree curls are always in style, but only if they look healthy and defined. If you have curly hair you already know that humidity is curl enemy #1 and there is nothing worse than a head full of frizzy curls. Start with a curl-friendly shampoo and conditioner to start your style off right! Keep your curly hairstyle free of frizz and fly-aways with some of my favorite frizz fighters:

Bain de Terre Anti-Frizz Recovery Complex Smoothing CreamDefining Moments

Whether your curly style is long and loose or tightly wound, curls need definition to look healthy. The less definition to a curl, the more unfinished and unhealthy it looks. Tousled, sexy curls are pretty, unruly, messy curls make people cringe. Coax your curls into shapely, sexy, curves with these best-selling curl definers:

Davines Momo Curl Enhancing Serum, Abba Instant Recall Curl Activator, Fudge Skrewd Curl Enhancer, Bain de Terre Anti-Frizz Smoothing Crème Recovery Complex (pictured), Bumble and Bumble Curl Conscious Curl Creme Wavy Woman.

CHI Turbo Hair DryerDiffuse the Situation

You may think a diffuser is a curl’s best friend; but only if it’s attached to a great hair dryer. Built on the principle that curls should be pampered and not blown dry into a knotty mess, diffusers come in many varieties perfect for short curly hairstyles and long alike. Shorter styles dry faster, longer lengths take more time, so be sure your diffuser works well with your hair dryer to crank out enough airflow for the length of your locks. These hair dryers are sure to deliver power and pampering with or without your diffuser:

Terax Gloss Finishing SerumMega Shine

Straight hair seems to shine effortlessly, but it’s a myth to think that curly hairstyles cannot be super shiny too. You just need the right products…in the right amounts. Whether you choose a glossing styling spray, a shine enhancing lotion, or a polishing crème, just remember that less is more when applying any shine enhancer. Turn your shine up to eleven with these mega shine must-haves created especially for curly locks:

My hair, my iron or too much product?

Question:
I use chi silk infusion with my chi nano flat iron and I noticed that my hair looks oily at the roots, am I using too much or should I switch products? My sister told me chi silk infusion works for her and gets her hair smooth, so I hoped it would work just as good for me. My hair isn’t oily all the time. Can you help?

– Victoria via email

CHI Silk InfusionAnswer:
Most people go a little too heavy in the product department so at first I would make sure that you aren’t using too much. With a product like CHI Silk Infusion, a little goes a long way, and if your hair has enough of its own natural moisture (read “it isn’t dry”) you don’t need much product for it to be effective.

Everyone’s hair has natural oils in it and these oils are usually more abundant and more noticeable at the roots where your hair grows. I would go very lightly with the product on the root are and concentrate more on the ends of the hair, where it is more susceptible to drying and damage, and needs the most protection from the heat.

When you straighten, your flat iron will use ions to smooth your hair and seal in its natural moisture and shine. This will also bring out more natural oils and can also be contributing to a more oily look.

If you still notice an oily look using less product, you might want to switch to another shampoo and conditioner to address the problem, but if your hair isn’t always oily, this sounds to me like ‘product overload’. The look you want is smooth and silky, never oily or greasy.

You should also take a glance at the tip below, a little cornstarch will help fix your style if you have too much natural oil or too much product on your hair. It’s especially good near the roots, which is great for your concern. Thanks!

-StraightBelle

No time to wash your hair?

Did you know you can use cornstarch to absorb the oil? Yes, it works just like a dry shampoo. Just sprinkle up to 1/4 cup throughout your hair, and get those roots where the oil is most prominent. Let it sit for 3-5 minutes and brush or shake it out. No one will ever know!

Getting started with a CHI Auto-Digital Wet-to-Dry Flat Iron:

CHI 44 Iron GuardBefore you Straighten:

CHI 44 Iron Guard and CHI Silk Infusion.

Using your CHI Auto-Digital Ceramic Flat Iron
Section the hair and start with a section approx. ½ inch (1 cm) in thickness.
Start from underneath and work your way up.

Thinner sections = more intense, thorough heat

Continue styling ½ inch sections until entire head is finished.

Not tonight, I’m deep conditioning my hair…

Back in the day, one of the greatest excuses to pass on a potentially bad date and stay home on a Friday night was, “I’m washing my hair.” Funny, those guys never picked up on the real meaning, but I think those girls had a great idea when they made that one up. I must admit, from time to time I enjoy using a Friday night for a deep conditioning hair treatment, a home hair coloring, a mani/pedi, some eyebrow maintenance…sometimes an entire night of beauty. It’s especially good if I plan on going out Saturday night!

I usually choose Friday nights for a deep conditioning hair treatment because I’m always super tired after a long week of work, and I find it a nice way to treat myself, relax, and take care of my hair at the same time.  Plus, my deep conditioning treatments have a tendency to leave my hair unusually soft and hard to style. That’s fine for my Saturday morning when I’m running errands, going to the gym, doing some cleaning around the house. It’s not something I want to deal with on a Monday morning when I’m getting ready for work!

Tonight I plan on using one of my favorite hair moisturizing treatments – Mayonnaise. Yep, mayo. This treatment is great for seeping deep into those hair strands and adding much needed moisture, especially in the winter months. At first I was a little concerned about putting ‘food’ on my hair, but I got over it pretty quick after seeing the results, and it is now one of my favorite natural beauty secrets.

The treatment is easy too:
Just massage 1/4 to 1 cup (depending on hair length) of Mayonnaise into dry hair. Make sure to use this time to massage your scalp as well – that’s the relaxing part! I use a little at a time, concentrating on my dry ends and work my way up towards my scalp. You can also just do the ends if you feel that’s where you need to focus the hydration.

Once your hair is coated thoroughly (and remember, less is more in this case!) wrap your hair in a pile on top of your head and cover with a plastic shower cap. If you don’t have a shower cap, a plastic bag, or even saran wrap works just as well. You really just want to keep the mayo seeping into your hair and not getting all over the place, it is very greasy. I also like to wrap a towel around the plastic bag. It’s more secure and comfortable and it keeps my head warm while the mayo goes to work.

With head wrapped in plastic (my husband just loves this look I’m sure), set a timer for 10-30 minutes depending on your hair length and dryness. I’d say 10 minutes would work for everyone but you 30 minute girls know who you are! I could probably go at least 45 minutes with this treatment, but I truly think 30 minutes is plenty of time for a great deep condition.

After you think you’ve gone long enough, rinse the mayo out thoroughly in the shower with warm water. You’ll immediately notice the difference in your hair’s texture and manageability. After rinsing, shampoo and condition as usual. You will probably only need a tiny bit of conditioner after a treatment like this. You’ll find your hair is super soft and extra shiny.

So once and a while pick a Friday night for yourself, put the fancy schmancy treatments away and give mayo a try, I bet you’ll love the results!

Thinning Hair? Meet Nioxin

For nearly twenty years, Nioxin has worked at unraveling the complex challenge of how best to address, and most importantly, how to provide a solution for thin-looking hair for the millions who battle this discouraging problem. After years of research it is clear to them that the health of the scalp is directly related to the health and growth cycle of human hair, and practicing proper scalp hygiene requires a careful process of preventive maintenance and daily care.

Nioxin Sytem 1 Starter KitFor Nioxin, it takes more than one step or one product to achieve a healthy, nourished scalp. It’s important to use a system of customized products for your hair type and condition—products that cleanse the hair shaft, the environment on the scalp skin and the follicle tissue.

Then, it’s essential to moisturize and energize the cellular activity of the scalp skin and the living hair, nourishing the hair follicle and surrounding tissue. This process requires using select cleansers, conditioners and treatments, supplements and styling products that contain bionutrients, like vitamins, proteins and amino acids.

Did you know?
Many conventional shampoos, conditioners and styling products simply coat the hair and create buildup on the scalp. The scalp must be treated properly to keep the scalp environment and hair looking young, healthy and vibrant.

Only Nioxin has the unconventional ingredients and unconventional products for that process. Nioxin products are formulated to be Skincare for the scalp because beautiful, healthy-looking hair starts where your hair begins—with the scalp.

Through a daily regimen of cleansing, moisturizing and nourishing, each Nioxin system works to help improve the appearance of thinning hair while creating and maintaining an optimum scalp environment in three easy steps:

Nioxin System 1 Shampoo

Step 1
CLEANSE: Your daily volumizing cleanser should gently remove residue and DHT from the hair and scalp to promote a healthy scalp environment.

It should also provide nourishing vitamins, proteins and amino acids. See Nioxin Shampoo Cleanser System 1.

Nioxin System 1 ConditionerStep 2
MOSTURIZE:
A daily volumizing hair and scalp conditioner should moisturize and energize while promoting a healthy scalp environment with soothing essential oils, special anti-oxidants and enzymatic complexes.

See Nioxin Scalp Therapy Conditioner System 1.

Nioxin System 1 Scalp TherapyStep 3
NOURISH: A daily leave-in scalp treatment should contain an SPF 15 sunscreen that protects the scalp skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays – while delivering essential botanicals, nutrients, antioxidants and cytokines (proteins) onto the scalp skin and hair to help safeguard against environmental residue and DHT buildup on the scalp. See Nioxin Scalp Treatment System 1.

What’s so great about Ionic Technology?

Question:
What’s so great about negative ions? – EVERYONE asks this one!

CHI Original Ceramic 1Answer:
Great question! For this answer we looked at one of the most ionic irons out there: The CHI Original flat iron. According to CHI – they are like the godfather of flat irons, so they know what they’re talking about – negative ions are very important in the hair straightening, or better yet, the hair smoothing process.

Everyone’s hair carries a positive electrical charge that is caused by dryness. Over time, this positive charge increases, and as your hair becomes drier, more hair cuticles open, creating ‘ragged’ unhealthy looking (and feeling) hair that is difficult to style, and let’s be honest, looks like it has seen better days. Enter the flat iron, or even the hair dryer that creates negative ions.

When the flat iron or hair dryer is heated, negative ions are created. The negative ions created by the appliance cancel out the positive hair charges, and while you glide down your hair with the iron, or blow dry, you smooth down those ragged open hair cuticles. That’s why I said hair smoothing instead of hair straightening. If you use your flat iron to create curls it will still smooth down the hair cuticles allowing them to lay flat and frizz free, but still enable it to curl. Nice! Remember, flat irons aren’t just for straightening anymore.

Smoothing down the hair cuticles will seal in your hair’s own natural oils and moisture. This is very important to the health and look of your hair. An increase in natural oil creates healthier, more vibrant looking hair that is also more manageable and full of shine (instead of dry and dull locks). This will also explain why your highlights look brighter when you use your flat iron too.

So in the flat iron world, nothing is more positive than tons of negative (ionic) activity!
