Curling with a Flat Iron, Finally!

How can you curl your hair with a flat iron?  This is a MAJOR question asked daily. Honestly I have always found it difficult to curl with a flat iron.  I usually tell my readers to just invest in a $30 curling iron because it is so hard.

That being said, I just came across this video that may be the key to accomplishing soft beautiful flat iron curls.  The stylist positions the flat iron vertically pointing downwards and uses it as a tong!  He moves the iron down and twists the iron allowing your hair to gently roll through the plates.  I have completely been doing it the wrong way!

So I decided to warm up my flat iron, which of course is right next to my laptop, and turn that baby on.  Within 60 seconds, and literally for the first time, I curled my hair with a flat iron!!!  Take a look at my picture.

The images are ok – but think what I could do with 5 minutes.  Soft beautiful curls are awaiting you, finally!  Watch this video immediately.  He is using a GHD flat iron, my all time fav iron!

Curling with Asian Hair

Hi!
I have a wedding to attend in about 2 weeks. I have been trying to curl my super straight hair and spraying various products to see what will make the curls stay. Nothing seems to work! I have super straight asian hair and everytime I curl my long hair, the curls just become straight within 1 hour or so. How do I get those pretty curls to stay in my hair? What hair products and curling iron would you recommend? Could you give me a step by step on what hair products to apply first?  Thank you so much!! I’ve been trying for years to get curls to stay in my hair and nothing has worked.

Dear StyleBell Reader,

It is very difficult to curl Asian hair and to retain the curl once completed.  Styling products are definitely your friend and probably the only way you will be able to keep that curl all night.  I would try using both a mousse and a hairspray to keep the bounce in your curl.
1) Put a light mousse on your hair while damp, Davines Volume Soft Hold Mousse is a good choice.
2) When curling each group of hair you can use any curling iron which has high heat like the Hot Tools Curling Iron with variable temperature.
3) While curling each group of hair, spritz hair spray each time.  This will provide better hold.  Davines Glam Power Spray is an excellent choice.
4) Once you are complete with your curls spray more hairspray on the style.

How to Manage Curly Hair

Those curls those curls how do I manage those curls?  Is that your daily mantra?  Throw your flat irons in the garbage and cancel your Japanese straightening appointment!  Miyesha’s video will help you go au natural curly within weeks with these incredible curly hair management tips!

Tip 1:  Wash your hair once a week. Do not wash your hair daily as this will dry your hair out. Instead of washing rinse and condition daily.
Tip 2:  Change conditioner brands. Hair tends to get used to hair products and switching them will keep your hair looking its best
Tip 3:  Lightly towel dry your hair.
Tip 4:  Always use a diffuser when blow drying your hair. A diffuser will limit the hair dryer’s air flow and concentrate the heat to help dry your hair. Every so often allow your hair to air dry.
Tip 5:  Use the Redken Anti Snap Extreme Leave In Treatment to help prevent breakage and keep hair healthy.
Tip 6:  Use the Redken Smooth Down Detangling Cream to polish hair and retain moisture.
Tip 7:  Use a mini curling iron, Hot Tools 3/8” Curling Iron, to help accentuate individual curls and create a polished look.

Celeb Style: Giselle Bundchen

Giselle BundchenWhile a lot of us can only dream of looking like Brazilian bombshell Giselle Bundchen, most of us can recreate her carfree waves in a few simple steps. Practice making your own super sexy runway waves with a Hot Tools 1-1/2″ curling iron. The larger barrel will make coils carefree, not controlled for a more casual chic look. Everyone agrees this hairstyle works best on second day ‘dirty’ hair – so wash it the day prior to styling. Before curling, work a little Davines Defining Volume Mousse through your hair to help hold the curls. Then after curling, tug downward on each curl gently to relax it. After tugging, pull some sections out of each curl and separate the strands, giving your hair a more piece-y look. To tousle your style even more, after creating the curls and pulling them apart, use a little texturizing cream, turn upside-down and work through hair to ends to get that messy look with loads of extra volume. We’re talking Smokin’ hot.

Edward Tricomi Feeds Our Curl Cravings

Hot Tools 1-1/2Who better to learn the art of curl creation from than a master? Celebrity stylist Edward Tricomi (hello, the Tricomi part of the Warren-Tricomi Salon in NYC!) shows us how to create those killer celebrity curls we crave. Of course you can pick up the Hot-Set Spray from any Warren-Tricomi Salon – it’s great on all hair types and works along with the heat of your big barrel curling iron (or flat iron if you prefer). A few sprays creates a firm, soft texture to set the curl and add a high-gloss shine. Bonus points: It repels the dreaded “H” word – humidity.

Celeb Style: Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer LopezFrom Fly Girl to J-Lo to Bennifer to new Mom (congratulations on the twins), Jennifer Lopez has taken many a stylish step, especially with her hair. I love that she’s 9 months pregnant in this pic and her hair is fabulous. For this look, first straighten your hair with your favorite flat iron, then lightly coat your strands with a tiny bit of mousse to coax the curls. Then, taking 1 inch pieces, use a 1-1/2″ curling iron to create long, loose curls from ear level down. After curling, gently brush out your hair with a paddle brush to relax the curls and add volume and body. Finish with hairspray and get ready for your own close up.
