Valentine’s Day: Romance Begins With Your Hair

Do you have someone special to celebrate next week with?

Well, whether you do or do not, this is a great excuse to celebrate yourself and up the “wow” factor. We consulted celebrity hairstylist, Paul Labrecque, who shared his secrets for achieving muse-like curls, seductive waves, lovely chignons and a few additional flirty looks that are perfect for the holiday.

Sexy, Soft & Touchable Curls
If you have naturally curly hair, this type of curl is so easy to achieve—you just have to choose the right product!

An anti-frizz curl activator (such as Paul Labrecque Curly Style) is the perfect item to begin with (Curly Style has been recognized by Allure magazine as a Best of Beauty 2009 winner). It forms curls without making them crisp, fragile or frizzy. Put a dollop on damp hair, then twist sections of hair around one of your fingers. Let hair dry naturally or use a diffuser for added volume.

Don’t despair those with straighter hair, this look can still be yours!

Spray damp hair with a volumizer (like Paul Labrecque Volume Style) and then rough dry it with your hands. Once hair is dry, use two different sized barrel curling irons—one smaller and one larger, to achieve a beautiful textured look that’s random and uneven. When the ironing is done, use an alcohol-free silicone product to work through hair with your hands to separate and free hair to make the style complete.

For another stunning curly look that’s one of Paul’s favorite easy to achieve romantic looks…it only appears quite complicated!

Gather curly strands into a loose pony and make sure not all of your ears are exposed. Fold the ponytail under and secure the ponytail band to the hair at the nape of your neck with two crisscrossing pins. Finish by spraying a light shield of glitter on your hair—the sparkling whimsy is both playful and put-together

Seductive & Loose Waves

Make sure hair is very wet before you begin styling…

Apply a curl activating gel and a leave-in conditioner (Paul Labrecque’s Curly Style and Repair Style are excellent choices— the products were created specifically for hydration and curl separation). After product is applied, twist wet hair into ringlets. Slowly dry hair with a diffuser and make sure you don’t break the curl. It’s very important you don’t move your hair while drying since too much touching during this phase could cause frizz. Once hair is dry add a shine serum for extra gloss (such as Paul Labrecque’s Curly Finish– this lightweight Camelia Oil spray won’t weigh hair down, and its glossy finish makes waves look radiant and very seductive.)

Quick & Chic Chignons

Start with hair in a tight ponytail…

Make sure the ponytail is smooth and set with a firm hold spray (like Paul Labrecque’s Volume Finish). It’s also important to spray the underside of the ponytail. You can do this while back combing the hair at the bottom of the tail into a fan. Quickly smooth the top section of hair over this fan and twist it under, leaving one piece of hair free to wrap around the ponytail. You can pin this hair in place with bobby pins and spray the style one more time for extra hold so it will last all day or night.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Simple Styles I Love: The Pony

Let’s be honest, my friends.

We’d all love to have elegant updos or sweeping waves on a regular basis, but the truth is most of us have crazy commutes, long hours, and dramatic personal lives to support. Spending an hour on our hair = not a daily reality.

So, I love styles that make me look put-together and pretty, but actually only take about as long as my Keurig takes to brew my morning coffee – and that is why I’m all about a stylish ponytail!

Yes, ponytails can be stylish. And to prove it, I consulted Master Stylist Sandi Milone of Dieci Lifestyle Spa. All we need is 1 bobby pin, 1 no-damage elastic band, a tail comb, and Sebastian Re-Shaper Hairspray.

Swear to god! Here’s all you have to do to achieve a smooth pony:

1. Comb hair into ponytail leaving a lock out from the center of the ponytail base and wrap elastic band around ponytail.
2. Add height to the crown area by inserting the tail of the comb through the hair above the elastic and lift away from the head (a little bit at a time).
3. Spray down any fly-aways and smooth over using the tail of the comb. Then take the left out lock and wrap it around the base of the ponytail, covering the elastic.
4. Place a bobby pin around the end of the wrapped lock and tuck underneath the ponytail and elastic. Spray again if needed.

If you’re going for a messy ponytail finger hair into ponytail instead of combing and follow steps 2 – 4 above.

Tip: If you need to make this pony last from work till happy hour, try to keep a supply of glittery elastics. They totally add some spice!

Formal Hair: The Messy Chignon

My work involves a large amount of formal events, travel, and cocktail parties – sometimes a combination of all of the above.

It’s hard to look pretty and poised when you’ve likely been on an 18-hour flight just an hour before, or are coming off a day of six appointments. Essentially, the easier the hairstyle the better – but it has to LOOK like a million bucks.

To help me with this conundrum, I consulted Eugene Toye, Ryan Cunningham and Eddie Ngai  – master hair stylists from the Rita Hazan Salon.

They said one great style to try is chignon – but in a very messy, modern take, and it can easily be done from home – or your hotel room!

Step 1:  To give hair just the right amount of movement and keep it from being too close to the head, use a volumizing cream and apply to freshly washed and well-towel-dried hair.
Comb product through hair and put a deep side part in hair.
Step 2:  Blow dry hair with a medium round brush for added body.
Step 3:  Then, brush hair back into a low ponytail and fasten just above the nape of the neck.
Step 4:  Begin winding the hair around the base of the ponytail, securing it underneath and on top with bobby pins as you go. Leaving the ends out.
Step 5:  It’s more modern to have pieces out for a look that’s slightly undone. Use gold or colored bobby pins to spice it up! (And that gives the added benefit of seductively REMOVING your pins at the end of the night!)

So, there we have it! As we are getting closer to the holidays, I’m sure that we all have more events than ever coming up. I’ll keep these style how-to’s coming!

Fashion Week: Aveda at John Patrick Organics!

JPO_9.10.09_Aveda_1Aveda was all Bohemian Chic at the John Patrick Organics Fashion Show at the Keen’s Steakhouse yesterday!  The hair style was super sexy and romantic.  John Patrick told us “This season, I wanted to dig deep below the surface of Bohemian style, and create a free-spirited look that’s chic, pretty, and fresh.  I was inspired by a photograph taken at the Krazy Kat Club in the 1920’s and sought to create of a dressy, “wholesome Bohemia,” defined by artistic endeavor and intellectual pursuit.  The collection is bright and optimistic—true Bohemians are enthusiasts.  It features a mix-match of happy, classic Bohemia and chic, wear-anywhere utility pieces.  The mix-and-match strategy is signature Organic, but shows my wholesome, Bohemian point-of-view.  What’s Bohemia without self-expression?” StyleBell agrees.

Odile Gilbert was the Aveda lead stylist, creating the magical Bohemian looks.  When asked how to re-create this look at home Odile gave StyleBell the inside scoop.  “This look is gorgeous and easy to recreate for day or evening.  Prep hair with Aveda Phomollient Styling Foam and create a deep side part.  Spray hair with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray and curl with a one-inch barrel curling iron.  Brush through to create soft, full waves.  Smooth the top of hair with Aveda Light Elements Shaping Wax to tame flyaways and achieve a smooth, modern finish.  Lastly, twist the front curl back and secure with a barrette, adding Air Control Hair Spray for volume and hold.”  Thanks Odile!

Fergie’s 40’s Insired Hairstyle

fergie

Fergie shined with this fabulous hair and her new hubby by her side at the Vanity Fair and Krug Dinner at the Chateau Marmont, hosted by Keisha Cole!   One of our fav stylists, Rodney Cutler, celebrity stylist and owner of Cutler/Redken salons created her glamorous 40’s inspired look.  I love this look!

Here, he shares his simple steps on achieving Fergie’s ‘do:

Start off by spraying hair with Cutler Protectant Treatment Spray to protect hair from heat damage.  Then, spray with Cutler Volumizing Spray to add a little volume and rough dry.

  1. Next, wrap pieces of hair around a 1/2 inch curling iron, created spirals.  Spray each section with hairspray before curling.
  2. Create a side part and over-direct hair so that hair sits flatter at the front.  Brush out with a Mason Pearson brush to create an airy modern texture.
  3. Pull hair back to one side, twisting slightly, and secure knot with bobby pins.
  4. Finish with hairspray for a long-lasting touchable hold.
