Sarah’s Tip of the Week

Having trouble with your scalp’s skin staying consistent — especially when traveling? Try rinsing with the same bottled water each day (if you’re a traveler, make sure the bottle is sold at your destination).  Using the same water will help keep your scalp’s PH unshocked and stable.  Read more of Sarah’s tips click here.

Dye Your Gray’s Away

Sarah’s tip of the week!

tea-bagsGray hair peeping out from your temples?  Make a thick, thick tea and dab the tannin on your grays for a quick fix (lighter tea for blonds, darker for brunettes).  A dab of permanent dye to tide you over until you have the full head of hair done is even better.

Curling with Asian Hair

Hi!
I have a wedding to attend in about 2 weeks. I have been trying to curl my super straight hair and spraying various products to see what will make the curls stay. Nothing seems to work! I have super straight asian hair and everytime I curl my long hair, the curls just become straight within 1 hour or so. How do I get those pretty curls to stay in my hair? What hair products and curling iron would you recommend? Could you give me a step by step on what hair products to apply first?  Thank you so much!! I’ve been trying for years to get curls to stay in my hair and nothing has worked.

Dear StyleBell Reader,

It is very difficult to curl Asian hair and to retain the curl once completed.  Styling products are definitely your friend and probably the only way you will be able to keep that curl all night.  I would try using both a mousse and a hairspray to keep the bounce in your curl.
1) Put a light mousse on your hair while damp, Davines Volume Soft Hold Mousse is a good choice.
2) When curling each group of hair you can use any curling iron which has high heat like the Hot Tools Curling Iron with variable temperature.
3) While curling each group of hair, spritz hair spray each time.  This will provide better hold.  Davines Glam Power Spray is an excellent choice.
4) Once you are complete with your curls spray more hairspray on the style.

Big Hair Makes a Comeback

sarah jessica parker anjelina jolie big hair

From Sarah Jessica Parker’s June cover of Vogue to Angelina Jolie’s July cover of Vanity Fair the celebs and supermodels are sporting big vavava voom hair.  Think 80’s without the aquanet.  Do we really want to go down that road?  Celeb stylists, like Ted Gibson, are saying yes!  Stylists are saying yes to the big hair but a way no to the stickiness.  Now with fantastic new products women are able to got the volume and build of the hair without the the flakes and dried up gel.  Check out our steps to getting incredible big hair.

  1. Apply a volumizing product to the roots, like the CHI Volumizer.  Next apply a controlling foam or gel, like the Davines Firm Hold Foam, to your hair.  After applying assure that you brush or comb through your hair.  This will allow for even distribution of the products.
  2. Blow-dry your hair until it is completely dry.  Make sure to blow dry your hair upside down or assure roots are lifted.  A nice medium size round barrel brush does the trick.
  3. Once hair is dry start with the hot rollers.  Wrap 2 inch sections of the hair around Jumbo rollers.  Leave rollers for about 10 to 15 minutes.  Remove the rollers
  4. Your hair should now have long waves in it.  Brush out, tease at the roots and brush out in the back.  Spritz with a light hair spray all over your hair.  Throw your hair upside down and brush underneath and style.

Voila big hair in a matter of minutues.  Enjoy!

Redken’s Fab Blow-Out Tips

Many women pay top dollar to get an ultra-sleek salon blow-out.  A great salon blow-out creates luxurious foundation for any style and adds polish to hair, which seems impossible to replicate at home. But impossible it is not!  With these easy expert tips and the right products, you’ll be blow-drying like a pro in no time!

Tools You Will Need:

1)  Wide-tooth comb to evenly disperse product and untangle hair
2)  Round medium-sized boar bristle brush or nylon/boar bristle combination brush
3)   Blow-dryer with an ionic feature to seal in the cuticle and lock in moisture for high sheen (not recommended for fine hair). Get one that has at least 2 heat settings: high heat for initial drying, low heat for finishing. Make sure your blow-dryer has sufficient voltage and a nozzle for a controlled, polished finish.
4)  A flat iron creates a sleeker, smoother finish and keep ends from curling under. If you choose to use a flat iron after you blow-dry, use on hair after completely dried and make sure it has ceramic plates to diffuse heat with maximum results and less damage.

Easy Steps for the Perfect Blow-Out

Redken\'s Blow Drying Hair Tips1) Apply a blow-dry product, like Redken Satinwear 02 Blow-Dry Lotion or Redken Straight 05 Straightening Balm to hair and use a wide tooth comb to evenly disperse product.

2)  Blast-dry hair on high heat until 80% dry, working from the scalp to the ends using fingers to disperse heat throughout the hair.  For added volume at the roots, turn hair upside down while drying 80% using a boar’s head bristle brush.

3)  Clip hair into 3 sections: 2 on the sides and 1 in the back.

4)  Blow-dry each section one inch at a time using a thick, medium-sized boar bristle brush and low heat. Use the nozzle on your blow-dryer to keep the airflow pointed down the hair strand to prevent unwanted fly-aways that can be exacerbated from humidity.

5) For each section, start drying hair at the scalp and then move down to the mid-length of hair. When the mid-length is dry, finish the ends.  To avoid your arms from getting tired, make sure to keep both your elbows at shoulder level, and use your wrists and lower arm to move the brush and dryer. And if you need to, take a break in between sections.

6)  To finish the look, touch up each section with a flat iron.  For additional control and frizz-free shine on your night out on the town, finish with forceful 23 super strength finishing spray to keep that blow-dried perfection all night long.

7)      Before heading out, spritz on some Redken Vinyl Glam 02 Mega-Shine Spray for instant gloss and a glam finish!

To add even more movement and bounce to this already sleek blow-out, “Roll two velcro rollers in the front two sections of your hair after your blow-dry is complete,” suggests Redken session stylist, Patricia Morales. “While the rollers are in place, apply your makeup. Then, let the rollers down and you’ll have beautiful waves with extra movement and lift in the front and you’re ready to go – a trick I often do when styling Demi Moore’s hair.”

A polished blow-out can easily be done at home with the right tools and advice directly from the pros! But remember, practice makes perfect, and soon you will master the look in no time. Thanks Redken for these fab blow-out tips.  For more information visit www.redken.com.
