Hair Dryer 101 with Conair

Conair SilverBird Hair DryerHow well do you know your hair dryer? Conair, makers of some of the best hair dryers on the planet, answers some frequently asked questions about our favorite hot air blowing friends.

What is the difference between a professional dryer and a standard dryer? How can you tell if you are getting a dryer built for a pro?
While many dryers have the title “professional” or “salon” in their description they may not be true professional appliances. A professional appliance has several features that allow it to withstand the stress of daily salon use. The three main features are:

  • True professional dryers have an AC motor. This type of motor has a longer life than the motors found in consumer dryers.
  • The design of the unit will usually feature a narrow barrel to help increase airflow.
  • The cords are typically heavier and longer than those found on consumer units.
  • In addition they will generally not have an ALCI plug as they normally are not used near water.

What is the cool shot button really for?
The cool shot is used to set the style in place at the end of drying/styling. The change to colder air temperature helps lock the style in place.

What do I use a concentrator nozzle for?
The nozzle attachment is used to concentrate and direct airflow, giving greater control during styling. The narrower the vent on the nozzle, the faster the airflow. Concentrator nozzles are generally used to create sleek, smooth styles. Faster, concentrated airflow dries hair fast and fights that frizz!

What does the rear filter do?
The rear filter will trap dust and hair, keeping it out of the dryer. To maintain optimum performance and prolong the life of the dryer, the filter should be removed and cleaned frequently. Remember a clean filter leads to a happy hair dryer.

What is a diffuser attachment used for?
A diffuser attachment is generally used on permed or curly hair to dry hair without removing the curl or creating frizz. They are not suitable for short hair unless they have “fingers”. Volumizing diffusers have long “fingers” that help direct the heat to the roots to create extra volume. Conair suggests all diffuser attachments should be used on the low heat setting unless otherwise instructed.

Conair hair dryers are probably some of the most recognized professional tools on the planet! Hair dryers like the Yellow Bird, Blackbird and Silver Bird are the industry standard in salons across the country, for good reason, they are long-lasting and provide professional results time and time again. Thanks Conair!

Ten Smooth Hair Tips from Aveda

Aveda1. Start clean. Always begin with freshly washed hair. This is especially important if you want your sleek/smooth blow-out to last for several days. Start with the right shampoo and conditioner. Aveda Smooth Infusion Shampoo and Conditioner cleanses and conditions to create a perfect foundation for smooth sleek hairstyles.

2. Protect hair from heat. Always blot wet hair with a towel to remove excess moisture. Don’t rub! It creates frizz. Spray Brilliant Damage Control on damp hair to detangle, reduce breakage and protect from thermal damage.

3. Apply before you dry. Always use a styling product before blow-drying your hair. Apply small amount of Smooth Infusion Style-Prep Smoother evenly from roots to ends to protect from heat styling and defend against humidity for up to 12 hours.

4. Quick dry. To shorten the time it takes to dry your hair, rough-dry it using only your hands. Use this technique until hair is about 80% dry.

5. Divide and conquer. Use clips to section hair off into small, manageable sections. Each section of hair should be no larger than the width of the brush you are using. By blow-drying hair section-by-section you ensure a nice, smooth and consistent blow-dry.

6. Give frizz the brush-off. Using an Aveda Wooden Styling Brush and a blow-dryer with a nozzle attachment on high-heat, direct the nozzle downward starting at the top of the section all the way to the ends. This helps smooth the cuticle down, while eliminating frizz. Continue this technique section by section.

7. Cool it. When hair is 100% dry, use cool air to set. This closes the hair’s cuticle and ensures your smooth blow-dry will last longer.

8. Finish what you start. Always apply a finishing product on hair before flat ironing for added slip, shine and heat protection. Run small amount of Light Elements Smoothing Fluid through hair and follow section by section with flat-iron heat.

9. Keep it dry. If you want to finish your hair with hair spray, make sure you use a very dry spray so that the hair does not get wet and revert to unwanted curl/wave. Aveda’s Air Control Hair Spray features a water-free formula that sprays on dry, provides light/flexible hold and helps protect hair from humidity.

10. Sleep on it. In order to help extend the life of your blow dry, it helps to sleep on a silk pillow case or wrap your hair in a silk scarf before bed. This keeps the hair from rubbing up on the pillowcase and causing frizz. For thick/coarse hair, apply Smooth Infusion Style-Prep Smoother before bed. This helps maximize smoothness and helps prevent excess volume in the morning.

Toppik – A Handy Hair Loss Helper

We get lots of FAQ’s from interested Toppik shoppers so we thought we’d post the most popular questions and answers here! Consider this your one-stop Toppik snapshot.

Can Toppik be used by men and women?
Yes, it’s great for both men and women. Sweet!

How does Toppik work?
The Toppik tiny microfiber “hairs” are electro-statically charged to form a magnetic attraction with your existing hair – however thin – and blend perfectly to conceal the appearance of thinning and balding in seconds. Think of it as a quick concealer for those ‘oh no, my scalp is showing’ spots.

Will Toppik match my hair color?
With eight, color-matched fiber choices available, you can conceal thinning hair from snow white to jet black and every shade in between. Toppik is available in Black, Dark Brown, Medium Brown, Light Brown, Auburn, Blond, Grey and White. Feel free to mix and match two or more colors if you want to capture the lights and darks of your natural hair color. Our most popular combo is Light Brown and Medium Brown used together. See the next question for a color combining tip.

I have salt and pepper hair. How should I use Toppik for best results?
Use white Toppik fibers in combination with either black, dark brown or medium brown. Apply the white fibers first and then “pepper” in the darker color. It will blend perfectly and capture the different tones of your natural hair color.

How do I apply Toppik?
A few shakes of Toppik above your thinning areas will disperse thousands of tiny hair-like fibers that will match your existing hair color, and bond with your own hair to conceal thinning and create a more natural looking, thicker, fuller head of hair. These tiny sprinkles really cover quickly too, you don’t need much to make a big difference in the appearance of your thinning area. Check out this video too.

How long does Toppik stay on?
The secure bond stays put all day (and night) even in rain, wind, you name it – it won’t come off until you wash it out. Toppik fibers will never run, smear or stain, and are proven to withstand wind, rain, and even perspiration. Seriously, it really stays put.

Will people know I’m wearing Toppik?
Toppik fibers look like natural hair particles and stay secure and undetectable as close as two inches away. People will notice you and your smiling face instead of your showing scalp.

What size does Toppik come in?
Toppik comes in 4 sizes perfect for your individual needs:

Giant – A 150 day supply. The best value and the best-selling, most popular size.
Economy – A 75 day supply.
Regular – A 30 day supply.
Travel – This smaller size is ideal for taking your “full head of hair” with you while you travel. It’s also great for on-the-go touch ups too. If you are new to the to the brand, or cannot decide on your color, pick up one or two of the travel sizes to give it a test on your own thinning areas.

How do I apply Toppik to my front hair line?
In frontal areas, spread your thumb and forefinger and place your hand on the top of the forehead below the hairline to keep stray fibers from falling onto forehead and eyes. For the best application on frontal areas we suggest using Toppik Hairline Optimizer.

How can I get better results with Toppik?
You may lightly apply Toppik FiberHold Spray to lock the fibers into place and to provide added durability and a finished touch.

How can I get a more natural look?
You can dramatically improve your results by using the Toppik Spray Maximizer and Toppik Hairline Optimizer. These precision instruments allow you to precisely spray on Toppik and enhance your hairline. You will immediately see an even more natural look.

What if I get Toppik fibers on my clothes or pillow?
The fibers are 100% colorfast and cannot possibly run or stain. If fibers do get on any surface, immediately just dust them right off with your hand and they’ll disappear.

Is Toppik compatible with hair growth drugs?
Yes, Toppik is totally compatible with hair growth drugs like Minoxidil and Propecia.

Does Toppik affect hair growth?
No, Toppik fibers can neither help nor interfere with normal hair growth in any way. How do I use Toppik and Minoxidil at the same time?  Apply Minoxidil (or any topical treatment) first and then apply Toppik. At night just apply Minoxidil. While wearing Toppik – a little may come off on your hand from the alcohol contained in the Minoxidil solution.

Can Toppik be used after surgery?
Some physicians advise their hair restoration patients to use such products to enhance the look of fullness in their transplanted areas. These products can also be used after surgery to hide the immediate surgery.

What is Toppik FiberHold Spray?
Toppik FiberHold Spray is the perfect accompaniment to Toppik Hair Building Fibers. This fine mist was specifically developed to increase the bond between Toppik Fibers and your thinning hairs. Unlike ordinary hair sprays, this formula uses sophisticated alpha grade resins to join thinner hair and Toppik fibers naturally and durably, so they stay put all day long.

How do I use Toppik FiberHold Spray?
Spray on after using Toppik Hair Building Fibers for a secure, long-lasting hold. May be brushed lightly after drying for a softer look.

What is Toppik Hairline Optimizer?
Toppik Hairline Optimizer is the ultimate way to get the best results from Toppik. Sometimes it can be difficult to achieve a natural looking front hair line. With the Toppik Hairline Optimizer you’ll instantly see the best possible results in less time, and use less product while you’re at it. The Maximizer is perfect for filling out your front hairline. For best results, use it with the Toppik Hairline Optimizer, a laser generated template that allows for a perfectly natural hairline that replicates the growth pattern of your own hair.

  • Remove the sifter from the bottle by gently turning and lifting it.

Ten Curly Hair Tips from Aveda

AvedaNow you can keep your curls in perfect coiled condition with the Aveda Be Curly curl enhancing product line and these top ten tips.

1. Start with the right shampoo and conditioner. Try Aveda Be Curly Shampoo and Conditioner moisturize and reduce frizz to set you up for styling success.

2. Always blot wet hair dry with a towel. Don’t rub! Rubbing creates more frizz.

3. Try not to shampoo every day. The natural oils in your scalp are beneficial to the health of your hair.

4. Refresh scalp and hair style between washings. If you decide to skip a shower one morning, simply spritz hair with Aveda Light Elements Reviving Mist, scrunching as you go to revive and refresh curls.

5. Curly hair needs moisture. Use Aveda Be Curly Curl Enhancer when hair is damp and Be Curly Curl Control once hair is dry to keep curls moisturized, defined and frizz-free.

6. Blow dry hair on low speed with high heat. And use a diffuser. This gives you defined, frizz-free curls. For extra lift and volume, flip head upside down when blow drying.

7. Avoid running fingers through hair as it dries. It causes curls to separate and become frizzy. For on-the-go touch ups keep Aveda Be Curly Curl Control in your purse to redefine and de-frizz as needed throughout the day.

8. Don’t brush or comb curly hair when dry, it removes curl and causes frizz.

9. Spritz curls with a firm hold hairspray. Aveda Pure Abundance Volumizing Hairspray prevents frizz in humid and/or windy conditions.

10. Wrap hair in a silk scarf before bed, it helps prevent frizz while sleeping.
