Set Your Style

Bain de Terre Flax Seed Finishing SprayAfter you have finished styling your hair and you’re looking fab, don’t you want to make sure your efforts are seen by everyone?

There is nothing worse than smoothing every last hair strand into perfect position before heading out the door to realize your fly-aways and split ends are showing by the time you arrive.

You didn’t spend all your time coaxing those curls into perfect corkscrews to have them unravel! You didn’t straighten those strands into silky submission to have them misbehave an hour later!

A good finishing spray is built on this principle. Some add shine, some add control and others create volume or texture, or both. But whether you like it poofy or sleek, your hairstyle needs a finishing spray. Definitely.

Shine Seekers: Davines Defining Glam Power Finishing Spray is the definition of glossy glamour.

Strong Hold: CHI Helmet Head. Hello, it’s called helmet head for a reason.

Softer Styles: Flexible, touchable hold is yours in a flash with Reflex Spray from the L’anza Art Elements line.

Scent Snob: Try Bain de Terre Flax Seed Infinite Hold Finishing Spray – it’s the perfect unscented styler.

Style it, finish it. Words to live by!

Winter Hair Needs Special Care

You make time for brunch with friends and for date night, so why not get in the habit of scheduling time for a hair treatment? Hair is especially fragile when the weather is colder. Between the super hot showers and the harsh winter weather your hair is prone to static and damage constantly. Good thing there are plenty of deep conditioning, moisturizing, replenishing and restorative hair treatments you can use at home that are dedicated to keeping those locks in perfect health.

Whether you pick a deep conditioning mask, a fortifying hair restructuring serum, a leave-in hair strengthening cream or a thermal color protectant, there are wide array of options available that with minimal time and effort will produce fabulous, salon quality results without a big investment. Here are some top winter picks by hair type:

Davines DEDE Leave-In MistFine, Lifeless Hair: The #1 culprit of bad hair days everywhere is fine, limp hair that just lays there lifeless. If this isn’t bad enough, in the winter it sits under a hat getting flatter by the second. Try something like CHI Nourish Instense Fine Silk Masque or Davines DEDE Leave-in Mist (pictured) to liven up that disappointing ‘do.

Dry, Damaged Hair: Broken, damaged hair lacks moisture big time. This problem gets magnified in the winter time when your skin and hair lose the most moisture, and is especially bad if you hair is curly or textured. Try products like Kerastase Nutri Sculpt Leave-in Repair and Joico K-PAK Deep Penetrating Reconstructor to undo all that damage. Dry hair can turn brittle in the winter, especially the ends.

Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Scalp TreatmentDry Scalp: This is a common winter problem that Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Scalp Treatment (pictured) washes away quickly with therapeutic tea tree oil and eucalyptus.

Color-Treated Hair: You want to keep your color looking vibrant and glossy, not dull and dried out. L’anza Color-Preserving Trauma Treatment will give your locks the moisture they need without washing out the color.

Normal: Yes, even normal hair needs a boost in winter weather. Try a leave-in lotion like CHI Silk Infusion to keep your strands silky smooth during those super cold months.

So save that money for ice skating and hot chocolate and do your nutritive treatments at home. These daily, weekly and bi-monthly treatments will keep your hair healthy and hydrated all winter long.

Celeb Style: Katie Holmes

Katie HolmesAre you considering this new ‘do for YOU? It’s a sleek, sophisticated look with the slightest hint of classic Anna Wintour, but Katie’s version makes it fresh and modern. The secret to this look (after a great haircut!) is to start with super smoothing products that remove existing texture and frizz from your hair before you start styling. Straight, shiny strands like Katie’s start in the shower with a frizz fighting duo such as L’anza Strait-Line Smoothing Shampoo and Conditioner. These products will get those locks super sleek before you even start to straighten. L’anza also makes a killer heat protectant to protect your hair while you style.

I’d suggest a 1″ flat iron that has curved plates and ceramic technology to straighten (see our list of Top Rated Flat Irons) and then go straight for a super shine serum like The End. A few drops will soften and smooth the cuticle, while locking out the dreaded “H” word – humidity. The End serum is weightless and will keep your look shiny and flirty.

Need more volume? Pump up the Volume in you Bob, will show you all the styling tips you need.

A Winning Shampoo and Conditioning Sidekick

Abba True Shine ConditionerI am usually not a big fan of the matchy-matchy, but I do believe in using a shampoo and conditioner duo dedicated to your particular hair texture and type from time to time. Whether your hair is straight or curly, black, brown or blonde, color-treated or thinning, or a combination of these, there is a specific set out there tailored for your individual hair concerns and needs.

Using a shampoo and its conditioning cousin together on a regular basis actually increases the benefits of each, and really gives your hair that one, two punch it needs. Over time my hair gets ‘used to’ certain products so I tend to switch back and forth between brands every few weeks, but I always keep the following (from the straight hair section) in my shower rotation. There is a reason for the matching names, they work together – what a concept right? Check out these product lines, they definitely do not disappoint:

Silky, smooth and straight: Pureology Super Straight, Abba True Shine (pictured above), L’anza Strait-Line, Frederic Fekkai Glossing.

Davines Love Curl Enhancing ConditionerCurls, twirls and waves: Davines LOVE Curl Enhancing (pictured left), Bumble and bumble Curl Conscious, Abba True Curls.

My hair has “natural” highlights (shhh!): CHI Ionic Color Protector, Pureology,

Thinning, flat or fine: Murad Professional Treatment, Biolage Bodifying Volumatherapie, Nioxin.

So many of us have a combination of hair concerns and styling needs and the good news is there are plenty of choices out there. Thanks to focused formulations and innovative ingredients we can each find our own dynamic duo. See? Sometimes matchy-matchy is a good thing.

Celeb Style: Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham

The bob you just can’t ignore, not that you would ever want to! This bob, or I should say POB, is getting mucho press and every time I turn around it seems like someone else has just gotten this mop chop. But what a transformation! This super cute cut is extremely flattering on a variety of face shapes and looks great on everyone I’ve seen it on.

A few tips for this hairstyle: Use a smaller flat iron like the CHI Volume 3/4″ Flat Iron. The slim plate width is perfect for a shorter style like this and the rounded edges make it the perfect tool for flipping those ends. Posh’s ends are pure perfection… ALWAYS.

I’d also start with a smoothing styler like Lanza Strait Line Smoothing Balm. Just work a little through wet hair to ensure your strands stay silky smooth. Finish with a light finishing spray that adds a glossy shine. Davines Defining Glam Power Spray perhaps? That would keep those ends in check while imparting that celebrity shine. How Posh!

Help! My hair is breaking!

Question:
“Hi. I have a question about flat irons. I have a CHI right now and I have used every major brand of heat protectant, including the CHI brand. Nothing seems to work. My hair is breaking and splitting even though I only use my flat iron once or twice a week. I am wondering if it is my iron, which is only a year old or my protectant? I visited your website and saw a lot of different irons, and they all seem to have the different benefits. Could you suggest a really good protectant and possibly a really good iron. My CHI cost well over $100 but if I can get better results with a different iron that would be great. If I have to pay a little more, that’s okay too. Thank you for your help.”

Answer:
If you are experiencing breakage, I can definitely recommend some tips for you to help with your hair straightening:

Davines Love Smoothing Conditioner1 – I notice that if you can get your hair as straight as possible before using your flat iron, that helps a lot. Try using a smoothing shampoo and conditioner first to relax your hair and prevent any frizz. We have a few brands you might like, Davines Love Smoothing Shampoo and Davines Love Smoothing Conditioner (left), or try L’anza Strait-Line Smoothing Shampoo and L’anza Strait Line Smoothing Conditioner.
If you can conquer any dryness and frizz before adding heat, it’s a GOOD thing.

HAI Ceramic Tourmaline Boar Bristle Brush2 – If you blow dry your hair straight first with a brush, try to use a quality ceramic brush that reduces breakage and also helps to smooth the hair’s cuticle and prepare it for straightening such as the HAI Ceramic Boar Bristle Brush (left).
Bonus points – this brush is Ceramic, Ionic and Tourmaline, all important for keeping hair smooth without damaging while brushing and you’ll love the gentle boar bristles!
Your brush could be contributing to the breakage – no one wants that!

Redken Extreme CAT Treatment3- Use a restructuring treatment to strengthen your hair from the inside, we have many of these, Redken Extreme CAT Treatment (left) sounds like it would work well for you.

I’d also suggest a nutritive leave in serum such as Kerastase Nutritive Oleo Relax Leave-in Serum.

Bonus Points: Kerastase Oleo Relax is one of my favorite frizz-fighters! It’s also an InStyle Magazine Best Beauty Buy Winner “Best Straightening/Anti Frizz Product” so of course I know you’ll love how it works on your hair.

Joico Kpak Leave-in Treatment4- Definitely invest in a good thermal protectant, CHI is for ‘normal’ hair but if you hair is already delicate and damaged I’d suggest going with something stronger such as:

Redken Smooth Down Heat Glide or Joico K-PAK Leave-in Protectant (left).

Look for these buzzwords: Leave-in, treatment, reconstruct, strengthen, repair, damaged hair, intensive… you understand. It’s best to find a treatment dedicated to treating and repairing the damage. Once your hair is in better condition, you can use a daily product like CHI Silk Infusion, but for now with your hair in such a weakened state, I’d go for something restorative for a few months.

ghd MK4 15- You probably need a different flat iron. Not all flat irons work the same for everyone because everyone’s hair texture is so different. I think these three might be good for your particular hair concerns:

GHD MK4 1″ Ceramic Flat Iron (above left) – it’s a higher price point than the CHI Original, but in my opinion is a superior iron for your hair type, and has a 1 year warranty. The ceramic, ionic technology will help smooth your hair without snagging, or causing breakage. I also find the GHD irons grip your hair better and smooth the strands, not just ‘flatten’ them.

Babyliss Nano Titanium Flat IronBabyliss Nano Titanium 1-1/4″ Flat iron

This has brand new technology to smooth up to 40% faster and a 4 year warranty, which is unheard of in this industry. Plus the larger plate width makes straightening longer hair a breeze. With hair like yours, you want to straighten fast, in one pass, and Nano Titanium is a killer new material that does just that! You’ll be seeing a lot more irons with this technology in the future, it’s THAT good.

Maxiglide Flat IronMaxiglide Flat Iron

This has ceramic plates and steamburst technology to protect the ends of your hair before you smooth and straighten which would be good for you, plus a 1 year warranty. This is my third choice, and I like the steam feature but I’d be very careful of the ceramic detangling pins, make sure you comb  your hair before you straighten each section.

In general, you want to keep your hair healthy and protected, so any product that says ‘leave-in’ is a great step in the right direction towards reducing the breakage and improving the overall health of your hair. If you only use your iron 1X a week and you have breakage, all signs indicate that your are using the wrong flat iron for your hair type. I’d try switching flat irons and investing in a stronger, more protective line of hair care that is better for your delicate, broken strands.

Let us know how it goes.

Save Your Strands with Healthy Heat Protection

When you straighten your hair with your flat iron, do you ever think about the damage you may be causing? Yep, you should. There are a variety of healthy heat protectants on the beauty market to help take care of your hair and protect it from heat damage while you straighten (or use any heat styling appliance).

Paul Brown Hawaii Flat IronThink about it, if you are using a flat iron that goes up to 450+ degrees don’t you think you might want to protect your locks? Hair gets damaged on its own, it’s best not to add to it by literally frying it every day with a flat iron. There are a few great protectants that buffer the excessive heat from flat irons (and curling irons, blow dryers, pressing combs, and hot rollers!) while enhancing the effectiveness of each appliance. Pictured: Paul Brown Hawaii Flat Iron.

It’s best to choose a protectant that suits your comfort level. Spray, serum, lotion, gel? Hmmm… which is best? All of them promise to protect your hair, and technically of them will just by adding that layer of coating between your hair and the super hot temperature of your flat iron. When choosing a heat protectant, look for ones that are lightweight, heat-activated, and packed with healthy ingredients. Here are just a few of my top thermal protecting picks:

Redken Smooth Down Heat GlideRedken Smooth Down Heat Glide
Is it ok to start this review with WOW? This protective smoother from Redken is a leave-in serum that provides heat-safe control and tames even the frizziest frizz. If you have uncooperative, unruly, unmanageable hair, you must, must, must try Redken’s Smooth Down Heat Glide. Packed with healthy ingredients like nourishing macadamia oil, and smoothing candelilla wax, your hair will behave like it never gave you a minute’s trouble. Using ‘interbond’ conditioning technology, Smooth Down promises mega smoothing, intense shine and a long-lasting frizz free results. This product delivers. Big time.

FHI Heat Hot SauceFHI Heat Hot Sauce

Of course if you want super-smooth hair you should protect it from the potential drying and damage from flat irons, but why not repair it at the same time? FHI Heat Hot Sauce is different than silicone protectants…it’s moisture-based. This means that when it is heated by your flat iron it actually penetrates into the core of the hair to reconstruct and deeply condition the hair from the inside out. With regular use dry, damaged hair will be restored. Must be those heat-activated jojoba crystals!

Plus: You know I love great packaging and this little hot sauce inspired bottle is awesome.

ghd Thermal Protecting SprayGHD Thermal Protecting Spray
This lightweight, humidity resistant mist is formulated with exclusive UVA protection that provide thermal protection to your hair from heat styling damage, while moisturizing from roots to ends, and protecting it from the sun’s harmful rays. It promises to instantly provide a brilliant shine, repair split ends, and eliminate frizz. The end result is a luminous, glossy finish without buildup. Saving my hair from damage AND leaving my hair soft, shiny, and smooth at the same time? You really can’t beat this one. Plus, I like to spray products on wet hair. The less you touch wet hair with your hands the better. Your hair is very vulnerable when it’s wet, so a couple of spritzes will ensure a nice even coating.

Bonus points: It comes in three varieties to target your specific styling needs – normal to fine hair, dry/coarse hair, and weak/damaged hair. Can’t decide? If you are using a flat iron to create a straight style, pick normal to fine.

CHI Silk InfusionCHI Silk Infusion
Another Silk based product, CHI Silk Infusion doesn’t disappoint! Created by the makers of the best-selling flat irons, those guys really know what they are doing over there at CHI headquarters. Developed to work specifically with the CHI flat irons, this restructuring complex is a rich leave-in treatment enriched with pure silk, wheat, and soy proteins that penetrate and strengthen your hair while you straighten. CHI Silk Infusion works wonders, smells great and makes your hair look like you just came back from the salon. If you ever wonder how the pro’s do it, now you know. Plus, the added manageability and softness will leave you in healthy hair heaven!

L'anza Strait-Line Thermal DefenseL’anza Strait-Line Thermal Defense Heat Styler

This is one of our most popular heat stylers, and one you’ve probably never heard of before. L’anza’s lightweight spray-in treatment smoothes strands with a “Thermal Defense” barrier that protects hair from the excessive heat of flat irons, curling irons, hair dryers, hot rollers …everything. Its silky smooth formula provides gentle slip-through the hair for effortless glides down the hair section while styling. It truly lives up to its name; straight styles are super-easy with L’anza Strait-line. Though you may not be too familiar with this brand, people rave about how great it is – it’s a best-seller!

Bonus points: This thermal protectant also defends hair from the sun’s harmful UV rays, which can cause additional dryness and damage to delicate hair strands.

So go ahead and fire up your flat iron, just make sure to protect your hair first. We’ve got an entire section dedicated to healthy heat protection, so you’ll be sure to find one that’s best for you!
