@2010 Fashion Week with John Patrick & Aveda

Bridgett Bardot was the choice inspiration of the ORGANICS by John Patrick 2010 Fashion Week show. The hair was phenom and definitely hair raising. Aveda lead stylist Odile Gilbert created this amazing look. “Our collection this season is centered around big, beautiful hair that makes our hand-woven tweeds look happy. Despite some inspiration from Joni Mitchell, Lady Diana, and Brigitte Bardot, the hair look is modern—very young and fun, not polished or structured.” stated John Patrick of ORGANIC by John Patrick.

How to recreate this look at home:
1. Brush through hair and prep with Aveda Phomollient™ Styling Foam to add body and shine. Use a comb to create a left side part.
2. Divide hair into four sections: sides, back, and top. Fold the top section over the face and clip back to separate.
3. Backcomb the back section of hair with a brush to create messy volume. Spray liberally with Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray for maximum hold.
4. Create an anchor by crossing bobby pins horizontally across the middle of the back section of hair, just below the crown of the head.
5. Using large hair pins, attach a hairdresser’s sponge at the crown, where bobby pins are anchored.
6. Cross the right section of backcombed hair over to the left, pinning over the hairdresser’s sponge with large hair pins. Repeat with the left section of backcombed hair, bringing it to right. Take all remaining hair in the back section and twirl to the left to create a French twist. Secure the twist at the nape of the neck with hair pins, creating a tail of loose hair draped over the shoulder.
7. Set aside a portion of hair to fall in front of the left ear, and brush remaining top section of hair over the hairdresser’s sponge, Pin it into the French twist to create a “pouf.” Pull lightly with fingers to create loose, spontaneous volume. Spray with Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray.
8. Leave wisps of free falling hair in front of the left ear, and loosely pin remaining pieces above the right ear. Finish with Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray.

Hot Hat Hair: Stop the Hate!

Seasonal hats are very much a mixed bag for many of us. They keep us warm and cozy but when the wool comes off, make us look … anything but.

The key to success with hats is to work with the style rather than against it. Hats can be super hot, and if we wear our hair in ways that complement the hats on our head, we will amp up the heat, in more ways than one!

We consulted celebrity hairstylist, Philip Pelusi and he shared some tips on how to make the hottest hat styles of the season work.

Fedora
This is a fairly “manly” style of hat, so it works best with the contrast of a softer style, like loose feminine waves.
Create the Look: This type of hair style works best on medium to longer length hair.  If hair has a natural wave, try curl enhancing products to boost waves and a texturizer, and then let hair dry or dry with a diffuser attachment on your blow dyer.  If hair is straight, use a big barrel curling iron to add curls, some facing towards and some facing away from the face.

Newsboy cap
Newsboy caps are another menswear-inspired look; so again, it’s a great idea to achieve sexy contrast by going very feminine. For this style, Philip recommends a ballerina-esque bun at the nape of your neck. Remember that the cap is usually worn low on the forehead and this tends to cover most of the entire forehead.  Wearing a ballerina bun pulls the hair back off the face opening to face up! Hot.
Create the Look:  Part hair in the center and smooth hair back into a low ponytail at the middle of the nape.  Use a hair-smoothing bore bristle brush and a hair smoothing product.  Apply product to the ponytail also and brush smooth.  Twist ponytail in one direction and wind around ponytail and secure with a few hair pins.  Put on Newsboy and you are ready to go!

Beret
A sideswept pony is super hot with a bohemian beret. A beret has a French romantic look and this feminine ponytail really compliments that.  Tuck the hair back into a side pony so that soft strands peek out to make the look extra sexy.
Create the Look: Phillip says this look works best with straight or smooth hair.  Create a side part and use a bore bristle paddle brush and a hair smoothing product and brush into a low side ponytail at the nape on the opposite side of the part.  Secure ponytail and put on Beret.  Remember, the back of the beret should slouch to the opposite side of the ponytail!

So what is the biggest summer trend this year?  It is the top knot as sported by Nicole Ritchie and Gwen Stefani.  It is the simplest way to get an incredible summer do that works well both on the beach and off.  You can keep it simple like Nicole Ritchie with one single knot or got a little glam craze with multiple knots like Gwen.

How to get this incredible look?

Step 1:  First create a high Ponytail
Step 2:  Tease the hair in the ponytail
Step 3:  Then loop the tease hair around the ponytail holder and secure with pins

It is as easy as that!  You can do one, two or three top knots.

Kate Winslet Wow!  Kate Winslet looks beautiful at the Oscars Academy Awards!  Her hair is a combination of futuristic robot with old world classic.  Ideally I feel that her hair should have been a flop, however, the molded hair style maybe my favorite of the night.  I like how the hair is pulled back and shows off her dynamic perfect complexion!  Kate Winslet was the winner of the Best Actress award for “The Reader”.  Congrats Kate!

Blunt Bangs are all the Rage!

kim-kardashian1StyleBell recently noticed a trend taking over the celebrity hair circles.  Blunt bangs are all the rage and if done properly can really make an impact.  We decided to ask celeb stylist Nicholas Penna, Jr. of the “Best of Boston” salon, Salon Capri, his thoughts on this new hair trend.

1. Why are Blunt Bangs the hot style for Spring?

Blunt bangs are the hot style for spring because they add edge to hair. For a long time, soft hair was the trend and now there’s a change with some attitude. Celebrities such as Kate Hudson in the new movie Bride Wars and Erin Lucas from MTV’s newest reality endeavor, The City, are both sporting blunt bangs which makes it even hotter.

2. What hair type does this style work best on?

Blunt bangs typically look best with straight hair that is cut all at one length. However, we’ve recently seen stars like Kim Kardashian wearing her blunt bangs with wavy hair creating a contrast between the hip, edgy bang with romantic, tousled hair. Another variation to the blunt bang is to incorporate angles that frame your face, such as Anne Hathaway’s haircut.

3. What face shape do these bangs look best on?

Blunt bangs work well for everyone, if done right. Many times, younger people can pull off the style the best, but virtually anyone can sport this look. The best face shape for blunt bangs is a longer, oval-shaped face.

4. What are some other great bang choices for girls who do not have the appropriate hair texture/face shape?

Longer bangs that can be pushed to the side of the face add movement to the hairstyle, such as the side swept bang. This type of bang is the most universally worn and can look great on many different face shapes/hair textures.

5. Additional tips…

Blunt bangs add to style to your look, even when your hair is pulled back into a ponytail. You can just blow out your bangs and throw your hair back. It adds an egde to your look and gives you a change that’s not as drastic as a shorter haircut.

I think that this style is definitely going to last well into this season. It is a faddy look, but I think it’s one that will stand the test of time. As it evolves, I imagine people will start to wear the bang in different ways, more tailored to their personality.

Thanks Nicholas!  Check out StyleBell’s slideshow on fantastic blunt bang looks!
