The Chignon Hits Fashion Week

I spent much of February preparing for or at Fashion Week, and let me tell you – it’s exciting, sure, but a lot more exhausting than it looks!

However, it’s an exciting way to observe as trends are born. It’s also a way to revisit the classics!

Look at shows like the Venexiana and Woman’s Mafia Fall shows at NYFW, and celebrities such as Victoria Beckham: The top knot or chignon is becoming one of the fastest growing hair trends for 2010, and we saw it here first.

Want to be able to do it yourself at home? One of my favorite stylists, Philip Pelusi, along with creative director Jeffrey Reitz, created a variety of topknot looks seen during Fall/Winter 2010 Fashion Week.

For Venexiana’s show, the Philip Pelusi design team utilized a knot he called “Empire Chignon”. A twist on the classic chignon, the hair created for Venexiana was architectural and took on new height – literally. Like Kati Stern’s design esthetic, the hair was couture, high fashion.

Here are tips from the Philip Pelusi team for recreating the look from Woman’s Mafia (the Venexiana look is much more intricate):

1. Spray hair with P2 Refresh Hair to give hair texture
2. Divide hair into two ponytails: perimeter and crown
3. Pull the perimeter ponytail into a high nape
4. Spray again with P2 Refresh Hair
5. Pull a hair net over the ponytail and fashion it into “petals”

The chignon may not be for everyone, but it’s absolutely worth giving a try at your next formal affair!

Posh Spice the Posh Bob Cut

I know I know the Posh Bob made famous by Victoria Beckham is history or is it?  I have seen more women with the Posh Bob this month than I have ever seen.  Want to know how to create that fab cut?  Check out this video which details exactly how to get the Posh Bob look.  Enjoy!

Posh Spice New Hair

All I can say is Posh Spice NEW HAIR!!! Is this the end of the Posh Bob? Well it looks so. Insiders tell me that Victoria Beckham showed off her new short, Annie Lenox style, do at the Marc Jacobs fashion event at New York’s Fashion Week. Victoria told insiders “I felt it was time for a real change – and I love it! I’ve always loved the idea of having a crop”. Everyone needs a change sometimes!

I guess now the new saying will be “Posh Crop”. Is this the next do that will sweep America? Let us know what you think.

Today’s Hair Trends

Victoria BeckhamPeople are always asking me what is new in hair. They may not want to participate in a trend, but they want to know what it is.

The Posh Bob is the most recent nationwide trend that has enamored Average Jane.

The last one was the Rachel Shag!

Now, I want you to go out on a limb and guess why.

It is because these hairstyles can be tweaked to be flattering on lots of different faces!

So it is this observation that leads me to my next comment about hair color trends.

PINK.

Every day my blog stats tell me that people are searching for pink hair.

Really.

Every day.

And I am here to tell you that in the land of non-traditional haircolors, pink is the stand-out winner.

Go out on that limb again and ask yourself why.

Because pink is a color that can be tweaked to be flattering on lots of different faces!

And it has the added bonus of being considered “cute” as well as “sexy” and when pushed into fucshia, “edgy” or “funky.”

So you see, pink is the crayon color that Average Jane can pull off (in bits and pieces) and still is unconventional enough that when applied with a heavier hand is acceptable in the alternative cultures.

Add to that the changes in technology that enable us to make a pink color that actually lasts, and you have a winner.

There are even websites ALL about pink hair!

Now, this dabbling in the crayon box is nothing new.

Those of you who are old enough to have been doing hair or getting your hair colored in the eighties might remember getting a Cellophane. This was a Sebastian product that gave a bright deposit of color and was often used to make a boldly colored streak. My Aunt Cindy (a blonde in her twenties at the time) had a dusty blue streak. I thought it was very cool!

So here we are in the 21st century and we have done every natural color to death.

Blondes are blonde, browns are brown and reds are red.

But every shade can incorporate pink.

Live a little.

Remember the cardinal rule of haircolor: If you don’t like it, we can always cover it with something darker.

Which Chi for Posh Perfection?

“Ok, I took the plunge and got Posh’s haircut, but my hair is curly and I still need a flat iron. Should I use the little Chi iron or the one inch?”  – Caitlyn via telephone

Hello Caitlyn – congrats on the new ‘do, I’m sure it looks fabulous! To keep this new look in Posh perfection you still need to straighten your strands. Posh likes ’em sleek you know. But hmmm, which iron?

First, the Wee Chi. This iron has 1/2″ plates that are really meant for smoothing super short hair and for getting close to the roots. While this may be great for part of your hairstyle, it’s really just way too small to style your longer lengths.

CHI 3/4On the other hand, the Chi Original has a 1″ plate width which is great for the longer hair but it’s not really helping you out with the shorter strands is it? I’m sure you can guess where this is headed goldilocks… go for the Chi Volume 3/4″ Flat Iron

This iron is part of the Chi Original happy family, yet not too big or too small for your new style. It’s also got a rounded barrel design to help boost the body with a flick of the wrist at the ends. I’d flip the iron under if you want your hair to live up to its full Posh potential. You might also want to see our Celeb Style feature on Victoria Beckham.

Celeb Style: Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham

The bob you just can’t ignore, not that you would ever want to! This bob, or I should say POB, is getting mucho press and every time I turn around it seems like someone else has just gotten this mop chop. But what a transformation! This super cute cut is extremely flattering on a variety of face shapes and looks great on everyone I’ve seen it on.

A few tips for this hairstyle: Use a smaller flat iron like the CHI Volume 3/4″ Flat Iron. The slim plate width is perfect for a shorter style like this and the rounded edges make it the perfect tool for flipping those ends. Posh’s ends are pure perfection… ALWAYS.

I’d also start with a smoothing styler like Lanza Strait Line Smoothing Balm. Just work a little through wet hair to ensure your strands stay silky smooth. Finish with a light finishing spray that adds a glossy shine. Davines Defining Glam Power Spray perhaps? That would keep those ends in check while imparting that celebrity shine. How Posh!
