Is Natural Beachy the New Look?

Kate Hudson's Beachy Hair

Kate Hudson

So I have to admit I have been tempted to put my flat iron aside and let my hair go au natural wavy!  What has gotten in to me.  I always tell my bff’s that I can feel the trends.  I guess it comes with the territory.  So my quoted on next hair trend is the au natural beachy look.  How to get this look is as easy as waking up in the morning.  I have been using some incredible beach curl enhancing sprays that really work in creating a very subtle wave that is very natural.  My top picks:

David Babaii Bohemian Beach Spray

Frederic Fekkai Luscious Curls Wave Spray

Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray

Although the summer is almost over your hair will look fab in its au natural state with a little pick me up.  Very sexy and very now.

Curl Conscious? Meet Bumble and bumble Kinky Chick

Bumble and bumble Kinky Chick Curl CremeHave your crazy, kinky curls met Bumble and bumble? They have an entire Curl Conscious line of hair care that is straight out of curl central and I’m curls over heels in love with their Kinky Chick Curl Creme.

The Curl Conscious line also has shampoos and conditioners too, but if your curls are new to the brand, I’d suggest you go straight for the Bumble and bumble Kinky Chick Curl Creme to start. It’s a great styling product for those ‘enthusiastically’ curly curls and is the perfect treat for curls that need a little tough love.

Kinky Chick is a revolutionary curl enhancing cream made especially to soften and add definition to medium-to-thick curly hair. Most curls are not one size fits all and it’s nice that this product is tailored for those of use with thick, unruly tresses. We all know someone (and it’s usually me) who is commonly known as “the girl with all that curly hair” – this product is for her!

Just rub a tiny bit from roots to ends on your wet curls and wind, twist, twirl or scrunch your hair as usual. The creme will instantly soften and tame your mane without leaving it droopy or flat – a curl killer for sure. It also helps conquer your curl’s arch enemy – frizz.

Styling tip: Lots of curls? Lots of curl creme!

I also use a tiny bit more after I blow-dry to add more definition to some of those more “spirited” curls that just won’t behave. This curl loving creme makes them calm down quickly without a fight… whew!

Start softening and defining your unruly coils with Bumble and bumble Kinky Chick. Remember, crunchy curls are soooo 80’s. Bouncy, behaving curls are what you want!

Do I Need a Humectant?

“I’m going on a trip to Miami and it’s very hot and humid there. I love the sunshine, but whenever I go there I have very bad hair days. I never know what to put on my hair in that weather. Should I use a humectant or an anti-humectant? What is the difference?” – Betsy, via email

Hi Betsy! I have thick, curly hair and I definitely consider humidity my #1 arch enemy. It’s one of the biggest contributors to bad hair days everywhere and it’s very hard to avoid. Face it, you can’t escape the weather. Even when you’re inside the humidity will find you, but there are certain products to help you repel it.

On humid days, hair seems to quickly soak in the extra moisture from the air leaving you looking like the top contender in a frizzy hair contest. But what to do? You want to find a product that provides a barrier between your hair and the air’s moisture. Curly or straight, you want an anti-humectant.

A good anti-humectant is a non-water based product (obviously you don’t want more moisture) that will coat your hair strands and keep the moisture out. Think waxes, serums, silicones and shine products. Anything that provides a barrier between your hair and the environment. Top anti-humectants are:

Frederic Fekkai Glossing CreamBioSilk Silk Therapy, Terax Gloss Finishing Serum, Bumble and bumble Sumotech Pomade, Biolage Smoothing Serum, Frederic Fekkai Glossing Cream (pictured).

A humectant product does just the opposite, it preserves moisture in the hair. If your hair is dry, parched and lacks hydration you want a product that will help increase the moisture content. You should be on the lookout for any water based products dedicated to hydrating and conditioning your hair. These products will help moisturize the hair strands:

L'anza Tamanu Cream ShampooL’anza Tamanu Cream Shampoo, Kerastase Nutritive Bain Satin 3 Shampoo, L’anza Kukui Nut Conditioner, Bumble and bumble Tonic Lotion.

Don’t be surprised if you need both at the same time, especially if your hair is on the dry side. Try a hydrating shampoo and conditioner (humectants) to replace the moisture in your hair, and then follow with a smoothing balm and shine serum (anti-humectants) to style your strands and lock out the dreaded “H” word – humidity.

A Winning Shampoo and Conditioning Sidekick

Abba True Shine ConditionerI am usually not a big fan of the matchy-matchy, but I do believe in using a shampoo and conditioner duo dedicated to your particular hair texture and type from time to time. Whether your hair is straight or curly, black, brown or blonde, color-treated or thinning, or a combination of these, there is a specific set out there tailored for your individual hair concerns and needs.

Using a shampoo and its conditioning cousin together on a regular basis actually increases the benefits of each, and really gives your hair that one, two punch it needs. Over time my hair gets ‘used to’ certain products so I tend to switch back and forth between brands every few weeks, but I always keep the following (from the straight hair section) in my shower rotation. There is a reason for the matching names, they work together – what a concept right? Check out these product lines, they definitely do not disappoint:

Silky, smooth and straight: Pureology Super Straight, Abba True Shine (pictured above), L’anza Strait-Line, Frederic Fekkai Glossing.

Davines Love Curl Enhancing ConditionerCurls, twirls and waves: Davines LOVE Curl Enhancing (pictured left), Bumble and bumble Curl Conscious, Abba True Curls.

My hair has “natural” highlights (shhh!): CHI Ionic Color Protector, Pureology,

Thinning, flat or fine: Murad Professional Treatment, Biolage Bodifying Volumatherapie, Nioxin.

So many of us have a combination of hair concerns and styling needs and the good news is there are plenty of choices out there. Thanks to focused formulations and innovative ingredients we can each find our own dynamic duo. See? Sometimes matchy-matchy is a good thing.

For medium to thick hair:
Step 2
Towel dry hair. Squeeze out water – do not rub!
Step 3
Starting with a quarter-size dollop, work Curl Cream into hair with fingers from roots to ends and from nape forward. Lots of hair? Lots of Curl Cream. Use enough to thoroughly coat.
For fine to medium hair: Bumble & bumble Curl Conscious Curl Cream Wavy Woman
For medium to thick hair: Bumble & bumble Curl Conscious Curl Cream Kinky Chick
Step 4
Comb through with a wide tooth comb.
Step 5
Gently lift sections of hair and corkscrew around your finger toward your face (clockwise at left of center part, counter-clockwise at right) and twirl tendril downward. The thicker the hair, the larger the section. The finer the hair, the smaller the section.
Step 6
Work from nape up to natural part.
Step 7
After each twirl, tenderly cup and press toward the scalp (don’t squash) and release. Repeat everywhere. Don’t obsess – too perfect curls look fake.
Step 8
Pick random pieces around the face and on top and repeat twirling, making sure they curl toward your face from the root.
Step 9
When nearly dry (80%), place fingers spread at the scalp and gently press hair upward for lift.
Step 10
Don’t comb, brush, fuss or fiddle. If you really must blow-dry, use a diffuser to minimize frizz.
Step 11

Celebrate Curls!

Whether you have naturally kinky hair, soft curls, or loose waves you can find everything you need to keep your curly hairstyle looking great. Born without curls? These top tips will help you create more defined, longer lasting curls with hot rollers, curling irons, or flat irons with curved plates. From carefree corkscrews to ravishing ringlets, if you have curls, these tips are for you.

CHI Curl Preserve Leave-in TreatmentHumidity Proofing

In my opinion, carefree curls are always in style, but only if they look healthy and defined. If you have curly hair you already know that humidity is curl enemy #1 and there is nothing worse than a head full of frizzy curls. Start with a curl-friendly shampoo and conditioner to start your style off right! Keep your curly hairstyle free of frizz and fly-aways with some of my favorite frizz fighters:

Bain de Terre Anti-Frizz Recovery Complex Smoothing CreamDefining Moments

Whether your curly style is long and loose or tightly wound, curls need definition to look healthy. The less definition to a curl, the more unfinished and unhealthy it looks. Tousled, sexy curls are pretty, unruly, messy curls make people cringe. Coax your curls into shapely, sexy, curves with these best-selling curl definers:

Davines Momo Curl Enhancing Serum, Abba Instant Recall Curl Activator, Fudge Skrewd Curl Enhancer, Bain de Terre Anti-Frizz Smoothing Crème Recovery Complex (pictured), Bumble and Bumble Curl Conscious Curl Creme Wavy Woman.

CHI Turbo Hair DryerDiffuse the Situation

You may think a diffuser is a curl’s best friend; but only if it’s attached to a great hair dryer. Built on the principle that curls should be pampered and not blown dry into a knotty mess, diffusers come in many varieties perfect for short curly hairstyles and long alike. Shorter styles dry faster, longer lengths take more time, so be sure your diffuser works well with your hair dryer to crank out enough airflow for the length of your locks. These hair dryers are sure to deliver power and pampering with or without your diffuser:

Elchim Galaxy Hair Dryer, CHI Turbo Hair Dryer (pictured), Solano Platinum Hair Dryer, Babyliss Pro Ionic Hair Dryer Diffuser.

Terax Gloss Finishing SerumMega Shine

Straight hair seems to shine effortlessly, but it’s a myth to think that curly hairstyles cannot be super shiny too. You just need the right products…in the right amounts. Whether you choose a glossing styling spray, a shine enhancing lotion, or a polishing crème, just remember that less is more when applying any shine enhancer. Turn your shine up to eleven with these mega shine must-haves created especially for curly locks:

Davines Love Curl Enhancing ConditionerCurl Friendly Choices

Curl texture plays a big part in how cooperative your curls can be, and there are lots of curl friendly product lines on the market today that are tailor made for your type of curls and styling needs.
