Redken’s Fab Blow-Out Tips

Many women pay top dollar to get an ultra-sleek salon blow-out.  A great salon blow-out creates luxurious foundation for any style and adds polish to hair, which seems impossible to replicate at home. But impossible it is not!  With these easy expert tips and the right products, you’ll be blow-drying like a pro in no time!

Tools You Will Need:

1)  Wide-tooth comb to evenly disperse product and untangle hair
2)  Round medium-sized boar bristle brush or nylon/boar bristle combination brush
3)   Blow-dryer with an ionic feature to seal in the cuticle and lock in moisture for high sheen (not recommended for fine hair). Get one that has at least 2 heat settings: high heat for initial drying, low heat for finishing. Make sure your blow-dryer has sufficient voltage and a nozzle for a controlled, polished finish.
4)  A flat iron creates a sleeker, smoother finish and keep ends from curling under. If you choose to use a flat iron after you blow-dry, use on hair after completely dried and make sure it has ceramic plates to diffuse heat with maximum results and less damage.

Easy Steps for the Perfect Blow-Out

Redken\'s Blow Drying Hair Tips1) Apply a blow-dry product, like Redken Satinwear 02 Blow-Dry Lotion or Redken Straight 05 Straightening Balm to hair and use a wide tooth comb to evenly disperse product.

2)  Blast-dry hair on high heat until 80% dry, working from the scalp to the ends using fingers to disperse heat throughout the hair.  For added volume at the roots, turn hair upside down while drying 80% using a boar’s head bristle brush.

3)  Clip hair into 3 sections: 2 on the sides and 1 in the back.

4)  Blow-dry each section one inch at a time using a thick, medium-sized boar bristle brush and low heat. Use the nozzle on your blow-dryer to keep the airflow pointed down the hair strand to prevent unwanted fly-aways that can be exacerbated from humidity.

5) For each section, start drying hair at the scalp and then move down to the mid-length of hair. When the mid-length is dry, finish the ends.  To avoid your arms from getting tired, make sure to keep both your elbows at shoulder level, and use your wrists and lower arm to move the brush and dryer. And if you need to, take a break in between sections.

6)  To finish the look, touch up each section with a flat iron.  For additional control and frizz-free shine on your night out on the town, finish with forceful 23 super strength finishing spray to keep that blow-dried perfection all night long.

7)      Before heading out, spritz on some Redken Vinyl Glam 02 Mega-Shine Spray for instant gloss and a glam finish!

To add even more movement and bounce to this already sleek blow-out, “Roll two velcro rollers in the front two sections of your hair after your blow-dry is complete,” suggests Redken session stylist, Patricia Morales. “While the rollers are in place, apply your makeup. Then, let the rollers down and you’ll have beautiful waves with extra movement and lift in the front and you’re ready to go – a trick I often do when styling Demi Moore’s hair.”

A polished blow-out can easily be done at home with the right tools and advice directly from the pros! But remember, practice makes perfect, and soon you will master the look in no time. Thanks Redken for these fab blow-out tips.  For more information visit www.redken.com.

Ask US! Which CHI Hair Dryer Turbo or Nano?

CHI Hair Dryers, CHI Turbo vs CHI Nano

Hi StyleBell,
I am trying to decide between the chi turbo and the chi nano hairdryers. I currently have the turbo which I bought 2 1/2 years ago. I am having problems turning it on so I believe the switch is about to go. I need to get a replacement but I can’t decide bewteen the two. Any advice? Also can I use the diffuser from my old turbo on the nano? Thanks!
Thanks,
Christina

Hi Christina,
So here is the scoop on both of the CHI hairdryers. There is actually very little difference between the Chi Turbo and the CHI Nano (hush! don’t tell anyone). The Nano technology is one of the major differences between the two irons. Honestly it is the handle of the dryer that has the nano infused technology. This allows hair stylists to prohibit the spread of harmful bacteria between stylists. If you are the only user of this hair dryer honestly there is no need for it. The Nano hairdryer does have one more speed setting and an extra 100 watts of wattage. If I were you I would just stick with the CHI Turbo. I love that dryer! If you do decide to use the CHI Nano yes you should be able to use the diffuser.

Thanks,
StyleBell

CHI 44 Iron Guard – We Love it!

CHI Iron GuardSo you decide to upgrade to the “Professional” hair dryer and straightening iron and you assume that once you switch your hair will be shiny, frizz free, and bouncy.  Wrong!  After continued use of professional grade hair appliances many start to notice deterioration in their hair health.  You may start to experience dryness at the roots and split ends.

So what can we do to protect our hair from these high grade heating elements?  My secret is the CHI 44 Iron Guard Thermal Styling Spray by Farouk Systems!  Let me tell you this stuff works!  After continued use of this magic potion I have noticed an increase in volume, moisture, and shine.  It has also completely eliminated the pesky dryness at my roots!  This thermal protecting spray uses the power of ceramic to provide superior heat protection from the inside out.  This is exactly what your hair needs to beat the heat.  It also has Cationic Hydration Interlink™ that softens and balances hair, locking in moisture which helps to eliminate the dryness.

How to use this spray? Spray a light mist of the CHI 44 Iron Guard spray on your hair when wet.  Comb through your hair for even distribution. Blow dry your hair and style as normal.  I assure you will say bye bye to dry damaged hair!  StyleBell Tip:  Do not overspray this product as it will weigh down your hair.  Remember a little goes a long way!

Hair Dryer 101 with Conair

Conair SilverBird Hair DryerHow well do you know your hair dryer? Conair, makers of some of the best hair dryers on the planet, answers some frequently asked questions about our favorite hot air blowing friends.

What is the difference between a professional dryer and a standard dryer? How can you tell if you are getting a dryer built for a pro?
While many dryers have the title “professional” or “salon” in their description they may not be true professional appliances. A professional appliance has several features that allow it to withstand the stress of daily salon use. The three main features are:

  • True professional dryers have an AC motor. This type of motor has a longer life than the motors found in consumer dryers.
  • The design of the unit will usually feature a narrow barrel to help increase airflow.
  • The cords are typically heavier and longer than those found on consumer units.
  • In addition they will generally not have an ALCI plug as they normally are not used near water.

What is the cool shot button really for?
The cool shot is used to set the style in place at the end of drying/styling. The change to colder air temperature helps lock the style in place.

What do I use a concentrator nozzle for?
The nozzle attachment is used to concentrate and direct airflow, giving greater control during styling. The narrower the vent on the nozzle, the faster the airflow. Concentrator nozzles are generally used to create sleek, smooth styles. Faster, concentrated airflow dries hair fast and fights that frizz!

What does the rear filter do?
The rear filter will trap dust and hair, keeping it out of the dryer. To maintain optimum performance and prolong the life of the dryer, the filter should be removed and cleaned frequently. Remember a clean filter leads to a happy hair dryer.

What is a diffuser attachment used for?
A diffuser attachment is generally used on permed or curly hair to dry hair without removing the curl or creating frizz. They are not suitable for short hair unless they have “fingers”. Volumizing diffusers have long “fingers” that help direct the heat to the roots to create extra volume. Conair suggests all diffuser attachments should be used on the low heat setting unless otherwise instructed.

Conair hair dryers are probably some of the most recognized professional tools on the planet! Hair dryers like the Yellow Bird, Blackbird and Silver Bird are the industry standard in salons across the country, for good reason, they are long-lasting and provide professional results time and time again. Thanks Conair!

Dry, Dull Hair is NOT a Good Look

ABBA Pure Shine DropsBe honest, is your hair dull and dry? Are those ends brittle (translation – scary!) and parched? Dry hair is not only lackluster and lifeless, it’s usually unhealthy too. We all know dull, frizzy hair is not a good look, so why not fix it?

If you are experiencing dull, lifeless hair, smooth things over with ABBA Pure Shine Drops. This super smoothing, shine enhancing elixir seals in moisture and adds a high gloss shine to every hair type with only few tiny drops. And in this case, less really is more – a drop or two does just fine! ABBA Pure Shine is loaded with Rice Bran Oil that restores natural luster to those dull strands and, my favorite feature of all – it fights frizz.

These drops are dedicated to improving manageability, and can be used on wet or dry hair. I like to use a tiny bit on the ends on wet hair to seal in the moisture, then I usually follow with an entire “once over’ with another two or three drops on my hair when it’s dry. This helps seal my strands and locks out the frizz factor.

It’s also extremely lightweight, safe for color-treated hair, and of course it’s from ABBA so rest assured it is 100% Vegan, Sulfate Free, DEA Free, Cruelty Free and Eco-Sensitive. All good stuff. Why wait? Go ahead and banish the brittle, dump the dullness, and fight the frizz for good with ABBA. You’ll notice the difference after just one drop.
